OUR BEGINNING: BORN IN A BALLPARK – Born from a love for baseball, Blue Moon was first created at the Sandlot Brewery in Denver, CO in 1995, with the goal of brewing well-crafted beers inspired by Belgian styles with a refreshing twist. Among the many beers brewed out of Sandlot Brewery, one fan favorite emerged, and in true baseball fashion was named “Bellyslide Wit.” It wasn’t until someone said, “A beer this good only comes around once in a blue moon” that Blue Moon® Belgian White Belgian-Style Wheat Ale was born.

What is a Belgian-Style Ale? – Belgian beers are primarily ales – not lagers. Ales are made with top-fermenting yeasts that ferment at warmer temperatures. Lagers are made with bottom-fermenting yeasts that ferment at cooler temperatures and require a longer time to mature. Belgian-style ales come in many different variations, but some popular styles include:
Belgian white beers (witbier): Light, cloudy beers with a creamy, fruity flavor – often with strong coriander and orange notes Dubbels: Different varieties of brown ales, often with caramel, spicy and malty flavors Tripels: Bold, dense beers with a bit more bitterness, a golden color and hints of fruit, sweetness and spice Lambics: Spontaneously fermented beers made from unmalted wheat, malted barley and aged hops, featuring a wide variety of flavors, from fruity to sour

- According to that great oracle that is Wikipedia, “A blue moon is a full moon that is not timed to the regular monthly pattern.
- Most years have twelve full moons which occur approximately monthly, but in addition to those twelve full lunar cycles each calendar year contains an excess of roughly eleven days.
The extra days accumulate, so that every two or three years (on average about every 2.7154 years) there is an extra full moon. The extra moon is called a blue moon.” The brands owners, Molson Coors, suggest serving with an orange slice. It is also usual to carefully pour all but half an inch or so of beer from the bottle, then swirl it around to agitate the yeast and pour it into the glass, so creating a thick head on the beer.
Is Blue Moon an import beer?
Domestic Beers – The United States is where domestic beers are made. This means that any list of beers made in the United States should include well-known brands like Miller, Budweiser, Coors, and Michelob. Depending on its color, beer can have a wildly different flavor.
The pale-colored beers have less alcohol and are made with pale grains. This changes the taste of the beer so that it isn’t as strong. Bud Light, Blue Moon, and Coors Light are all examples of these kinds of beers. Interestingly, Bud Light Platinum has one of the highest alcohol levels in light-colored domestic beers.
People also wonder if Blue Moon is considered a domestic beer, and yes, it is. MillerCoors (now MolsonCoors) from the United States and Molson Coors in Canada produce this wheat ale. Bitterness is a part of beers that have been brewed for longer. People have said that these beers taste bitter and strong, like black coffee.

The Oxford Companion to Beer Definition of Labatt Brewing Company Ltd. The Oxford Companion to Beer definition of Labatt Brewing Company Ltd. is the Canadian subsidiary of AB-InBev and controls roughly 40% of the Canadian market. Created in 1847, when Irishman John Kinder Labatt took over a small brewery in London, Ontario, Labatt now has six brewing facilities across the country, ranging from Creston, British Columbia, in the west to St.
- John’s, Newfoundland, in the east.
- Labatt produces over 60 brands in Canada, including Labatt Blue, which for many years was the company’s flagship product.
- Originally launched in 1951 as Labatt Pilsner, it was renamed Blue in 1968.
- Today, the best-selling beer produced by Labatt is Budweiser, also Canada’s top-selling brand.
In recent years Labatt has been broadening its Alexander Keith’s range of beers. Originally a regional East Coast brand, Keith’s has grown into a nationally recognized name. In addition to its flagship India pale ale (which despite the name has precious little hop character), the Keith’s brand now includes a dark ale, a wheat beer, a red ale, and a light ale.
While a bit more flavorful than Labatt’s main products, the Keith’s line has nonetheless been met with little acclaim from craft beer drinkers. In 2007 Labatt took over discount brewer, Lakeport Brewing Company. In 2010 Labatt shifted production of the discount brands from the original Lakeport facility in Hamilton, Ontario, to a Labatt plant in London, Ontario, and closed the Hamilton location.
Labatt started broad distribution of Belgian imports such as Stella Artois, leffe, and hoegaarden after being taken over by Interbrew in 1995. Interbrew (including Labatt) was taken over by Brazil’s AmBev in 2004, forming InBev, before the combined company bought Anheuser-Busch in 2008.
