Is moonshine A Wine or whiskey?
Moonshine – Put simply, moonshine is untaxed whiskey – although that’s no longer the case. Making moonshine started early in American history when the new US government imposed a tax on whiskey and spirits to help cover the American Revolution’s expenses.
Because of the rich heritage of moonshine recipes, many distillers opt to maintain the moniker ‘moonshine’ even though moonshine is legal and is taxed. Moonshiners in the past didn’t have an absolute definition for what constituted moonshine. Moonshiners across the country employed various ingredients, including corn, rye, and sugar.
Moonshine has a flavor that is more like vodka than a dark-colored whiskey. This is because historically, moonshine is seldom matured, and obtaining and keeping oak barrels for maturing secretly would’ve been extremely difficult. However, because there weren’t any legal criteria, the flavor varied.

Can you drink Ole Smoky moonshine straight?
Ole Smoky Tennessee Moonshine There’s a lot of mystery and mystique around moonshine, and often the misperception that it’s fire water or on par with turpentine. The truth is that moonshine is more accurately aligned with Grandma’s home baked apple pie than the drink-it-and-you’ll-go-blind image it seems to have gotten over the years.
- Moonshine is often made from corn, although since it’s historically been an unregulated spirit, it can be made from just about anything.
- Unlike many un-aged whiskeys on the market (often sold under the moniker of white dog or white whiskey), moonshine isn’t an interim step between distillation and aging.
It’s a product that’s designed to be drunk clear, and in the case of Ole Smoky Tennessee Moonshine, it’s designed to be drunk straight out of the jar. Ole Smoky Tennessee Moonshine (100 proof $34.95) has a very light and sweet corn nose without any vapors whatsoever (pretty amazing for a 100 proof spirit).
The entry has a little bite and is less sweet than the nose. The corn notes come in pretty solid as we move into the mid palate where the heat increases noticeably. There’s a sugary, rum-like note that steps in towards the end of the mid-palate where things get a little vapory. The finish is pretty quick as the heat begins to fade and things ultimately finish up pretty clean.
When we first got the jar of Ole Smoky Tennessee Moonshine, we tried pouring it out into glasses, which ended up as a little bit of a disaster as it’s not an easy task to cleanly pour from a mason jar into a glass. We were then told that the moonshine was designed to be, and is traditionally, drunk from the jar itself.
- Drinking out of a mason jar is actually quite fun, and a nice change.
- We really like the nose of this moonshine and the taste does a fair job of matching it.
- We aren’t over the moon with the flavor shift towards the end of the mid-palate, but that didn’t stop us from enjoying this “moonshine experience”.
At $34 it does come in a little on the high side of things, a full $12 over Glen Thunder Corn Whiskey which we are huge fans of. Ole Smoky Tennessee Apple Pie Moonshine (40 proof $34.95) – A significant drop in proof from the main moonshine makes the apple pie moonshine extremely easy to drink in fairly large quantities.
- The nose is distinctively apple and spice, a little like spiced apple cider.
- If you didn’t know it had alcohol in it, you wouldn’t be able to tell from smelling it.
- The entry is appley sweet to the start and then it transitions in the mid palate to more spicy with deep cinnamon and allspice flavors.
- The apple flavors here are much more apple pie than apple cider and it picks up a slight vinegary note at the end of the mid palate.
The finish is longer than the original moonshine with apple flavors lingering for quite some time. We like the fact that Ole Smoky Tennessee Apple Pie Moonshine isn’t sticky sweet, and it’s legions beyond the Travis Hasse’s Original Apple Pie Liqueur that’s on the market.
How much does moonshine sell for?
Using the information provided by our calculator we can determine the cost using an average cost of goods within the United States. – According to Macro Trends, the current cost of sugar is,20 per pound. Does Tennessee sell liquor in grocery stores?
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Eggs, milk, and. vodka soda? That could be on your shopping list, if a bill makes its way to the Governor’s desk. You would still have to buy liquor bottles at the liquor store, but the bill would make it possible to purchase some of the pre-mixed cocktail drinks that contain vodka, bourbon and even tequila.
Under current Tennessee law, you can only buy beer, wine or malt liquor at Tennessee grocery stores. Anything else involving hard liquors requires a trip to the liquor store. “I think, as a citizen, I would like to be able to go buy it in a market or a grocery store,” said Rep. Pat Marsh, a Republican who also serves as Speaker Pro Tempore.
Marsh’s bill would allow for pretty much any pre-mixed cocktail to be sold at the grocery store — as long as the alcohol content didn’t exceed 10.1%. “I think it’s got a great chance; I hope so,” said Marsh. But it’s turning into quite the lobbying war.
- Distilleries like Brown Forman, which owns Jack Daniel’s in Lynchburg, are all for it.
- Liquor store owners are fighting fiercely against it.
- I didn’t think it was as big as it’s getting to be right now, but there’s some opposition coming out that I didn’t think we would have,” said Marsh.
- The battle reminds the manager of Compton’s Foodland of the fight to allow wine in grocery stores nearly a decade ago.
“I think it’s going to be gradual, and it’s going to take some time,” said John Carpenter, who serves as the store’s manager. As you might expect, wine became a big seller after that bill finally passed, and Carpenter predicts the same could happen with cocktails.
If it’s something the people want, then we are more than happy to look at that because at this point it becomes a win-win,” said Carpenter. “We would probably start small.” Customer Carrie Cleveland thinks it’s a common-sense move. “Most states have already gone to this as it is. Tennessee’s already allowing wine in stores, so you might as well do it and do it right,” he said.
“As long as you’re selling it safely and you’re getting tax revenue off of legal sales — go for it.” But don’t start making your shopping list just yet. The bill has several stops in committee before each chamber gets to vote on it.

Can you put Ole Smoky moonshine in the freezer?
Thank you for taking time to write a review for Ole Smoky. We really appreciate you letting us be a part of your visit to Gatlinburg. Just to clarify, all moonshine can be frozen no matter how high the proof is. It all depends on the temperature.100 Proof moonshine will freeze at -25.2 degrees Fahrenheit.
Our 128 Proof Blue Flame can be frozen, but it would require being stored at -43.4 degrees Fahrenheit. A 40 proof alcohol/water mixture would freeze at 17 degrees, however, since we use actual fruit juice and not flavoring mixed with water, the temperature will vary from flavor to flavor. So yes, Moonshine can be frozen, however, most home freezers do not get cold enough to actually freeze it.
Actually, some of our flavors will get a nice slush to them in the freezer without freezing solid which makes for a really great afternoon adult slushie! Hope that helps! Remember to Shine Responsibly!
