Is beer or liquor worse for weight gain?
Do Other Types of Alcohol Cause Belly Fat? – The most likely way beer contributes to belly fat is through the excess calories it adds to your diet. Other types of alcohol like spirits and wine have fewer calories per standard drink than beer. This means they may be less likely to cause weight gain and belly fat.
Interestingly, some studies have linked drinking moderate amounts of wine with lower body weights ( 35 ). The reason for this is unclear, although it’s been suggested that wine drinkers have healthier, more balanced diets compared to beer and spirit drinkers ( 7, 36 ). What’s more, studies have shown that the amount of alcohol you consume and how frequently you consume it also matter when it comes to your waistline.
In fact, one of the most risky behaviors for developing a beer belly seems to be binge drinking. Studies have found that drinking more than four drinks at one time can increase your risk of belly fat, no matter what drink you choose ( 19, 37, 38, 39 ).
Is it better to drink liquor or beer on a diet?
Go for spirits to shed pounds – One strategy to cut excess calories from your drinking habits? Choose spirits, but leave out sugary mixers like soda, tonic water, or syrups. Spirits often have the biggest bang for your buck: Just a shot of whiskey, gin or rum is likely to give you a buzz faster than downing beer or wine.
- They also are the lightest and lowest carbohydrate drinks of the group: A standard shot of whiskey, tequila, vodka, gin, or rum has about 97 calories.
- But cocktails are often sneaky vehicles for huge amounts of added sugar.
- A vodka cranberry and Jack and Coke, two popular cocktails, can contain over 30 grams of sugar, a number close to your daily recommendation.
Cider is also a notoriously sweet option at about 20 grams of sugar per serving. Swap these orders for a vodka soda with lime or traditional martini, choices less likely to throw your liver into overdrive than a Long Island iced tea. A cocktail could look healthy — but watch out for sugary mixers.
Which has more calories vodka or beer?
1) Vodka has a lower calorie count than beer – Vodka is made through a calculated distillation process. According to Brewhaus.com, beer crafters go through mashing, lautering, boiling, fermenting, and bottling the product before sale. The mashing step specifically involves mashing crushed grains with water that’s warm enough to activate the enzymes, which turn the starches into short-chain sugars.
Vodka distillers, on the other hand, mash, ferment, and distill the product before sale. According to HHAVodka, com, vodka is distilled 1-6 times and then filtered. Furthermore, they use a freeze filtration process before bottling to remove leftover impurities. Thus, distillation leaves nothing behind but the alcohol itself.
The reduction of caloric content, when compared to beer, is primarily due to this distillation process. Alternatively, beer is a high-calorie beverage because of the fermentation process. Vodka is less likely to trigger weight gain making it the go-to beverage if you’re on a strict diet or trying to lose weight.

Here’s where it gets important: American Dietary Guidelines state that “one alcoholic beverage” contains 0.6 oz (17.7ml) of pure alcohol.
Note: alcohol laws and guidelines can get a little confusing at times, check out our blog post Malt Liquor vs Beer to learn a little more about weird laws. Domestic beer generally has between 4.2 to 10% ABV (alcohol by volume) but craft beer is known to go up to 19% alcohol in some extreme cases. Vodka that is marked as 80 proof has 40% ABV.
This means that 12 oz (354ml) of 5% beer contains 0.6 oz (17.7ml) pure alcohol. The vodka shot at 1.5 oz (44ml) has 0.6 oz (17.4ml) of alcohol. When you compare alcohol content, this fairly simple math shows that one regular beer is equal to one shot. The system was created this way so you can easily judge and maintain your own alcohol intake.
- The system holds true for a glass of wine, which, by standards is a 5 ounce pour of wine, at about 12% alcohol (they’re the same numbers for beer, just flipped), so the ethanol content is still 0.6 oz of ethanol.
- Craft beers can have ABV as high as 19% (See Black Tuesday from The Bruery ((side note: here’s a blog post about a low abv crusher from The Bruery )) or Utopias from Sam Adams, which clocks in at a whopping 28%) while light lagers stay around 4.2%.
The world’s most potent vodka called Spirytus Vodka from Poland contains 96% ABV. It has 1.42 oz (42ml) of ethanol per serving. This makes it the equivalent of two and a half regular beers!
Why is beer drunk different than liquor drunk?
Alcohol is alcohol – Let’s cut to the chase. No matter what the drink, the active ingredient is the same: ethanol. When you have a drink, ethanol enters the bloodstream through the stomach and small intestine and is then processed in the liver. The liver can process only a limited amount of alcohol at a time so any excess remains in the blood and travels to other organs, including your brain where mood is regulated. Many people think drinking spirits makes them more aggressive. Photo by Adam Jaime on Unsplash The direct effects of alcohol are the same whether you drink wine, beer or spirits. There’s no evidence that different types of alcohol cause different mood states. People aren’t even very good at recognising their mood states when they have been drinking. So where does the myth come from?

Is drinking liquor better for weight?
If you are trying to lose weight, you can boost your efforts by cutting back on alcoholic drinks. Alcohol can cause weight gain in a couple of ways. First, alcohol is high in calories. Some mixed drinks can contain as many calories as a meal, but without the nutrients.
Second, you also may make poor food choices when you drink. While you do not have to entirely cut out alcohol, you may need to consume it more mindfully. You should watch the number, and type, of drinks you choose. You will also want to keep an eye on how drinking affects your eating habits. So, how much can you drink if you are trying to lose weight? Health experts recommend that anyone who drinks should do so in moderation,
This means no more than 1 drink per day for women and no more than 2 drinks per day for men. You may want to drink even less than that to lose weight. Keep in mind that alcohol has empty calories. This means it has calories (7 per gram versus 4 per gram for carbohydrate and protein) but no nutrients.
- In order to drink alcohol while cutting back on calories, you need to plan it into your daily calorie count so you do not go over.
- Remember that when you drink alcohol, you are replacing potentially healthy, and filling, food with calories that will not fill you up.
- When choosing what to drink, check serving size and calories.
Here is a quick comparison of some common alcoholic drinks:
Regular beer, about 150 calories for a 12-ounce (355 mL) glassLight beer, about 100 calories for a 12-ounce (355 mL) glassBeer, higher alcohol or craft, 170 to 350 calories for a 12-ounce (355 mL) glassWine, about 100 calories for a 5-ounce (145 mL) glassDistilled alcohol (gin, rum, vodka, whiskey), about 100 calories for a 1.5-ounce (45 mL) servingMartini (extra dry), about 140 calories for a 2.25-ounce (65 mL) glassPina colada, about 500 calories in a 7-ounce (205 mL) glass
Pay attention to what else goes in your drink. Many mixed drinks include juices, simple syrup, or liqueur, which add extra calories quickly. Look for lower calorie options, such as a splash of juice and soda water. You may want to skip mixed drinks completely and stick with beer or wine. Portion size is something else you should keep an eye on. Know what a standard drink looks like:
12 ounces (355 mL) of beer5 ounces (145 mL) of wine1.5 ounces (45 mL, or one shot) of hard liquor
The sizes of alcoholic drinks at a restaurant or bar are often larger than the standard amounts listed above. In some cases, 1 drink may actually have 2 or more servings of alcohol and calories. If you are served a drink that is larger than the standard size, skip a second drink.
At home, use a jigger when mixing drinks, and serve them in smaller glasses. It will feel like you are having more. Drinking on an empty stomach will make you feel tipsy more quickly. This can lead to eating or drinking more than you want to. Having some food before you drink will help your stomach absorb the alcohol more slowly and help you make better choices.
Studies show that people tend to make poor food choices when drinking alcohol. To avoid piling on the calories after a drink or two, have some healthy snacks ready to eat when you get home or make plans to have a healthy meal after your drink. Good snack choices include fruit, air-popped popcorn, or hummus and veggies.
- Just like eating too fast can lead to overeating, gulping down drinks may cause you to drink more.
- Sip your drink slowly, putting it down in between sips.
- When you are done, have a non-alcoholic drink, such as water or low-calorie soda, before having more alcohol.
- The best way to control calories from drinking is to limit how much you drink.
Before you go out, set a limit for yourself and stick with it. It is OK to turn down a drink you do not want or refuse a top-off on your wine glass. You can skip drinking altogether and volunteer to be the designated driver. Talk with your health care provider if:
You or someone you love is concerned about how much you drink. You cannot control your drinking.Your drinking is causing problems at home, work, or school.
