Is High Noon seltzer or vodka?
By Mary Small Published October 2020 Hard seltzer has been labeled as 2020’s ” It Drink,” but the hype around one particular brand has caught our attention – High Noon Sun Sips, While White Claw remains the alpha to the seltzer (six) pack, it seems like there will be an inevitable challenge to be top dog in the category. And this: According to the Shanken News Daily, “Seltzers surged 235% to 76.4 million cases in the 30 weeks ending August 8 in Nielsen channels, with sales up 220% to $2.37 billion year-to-date.” There is no doubt that all the major brands are sharing a piece of that profit pie, but High Noon, in particular, seems to fly off of our shelves.
- We noticed the growth of High Noon surge 64% from April 2020 to May 2020.
- At first glance, it would be simple to write this off as a seasonal spike.
- Summer comes and everyone tends to drink a little lighter and find something cool and refreshing to ice down in their coolers; but the seltzer category itself grew 34%.
What was the cause of High Noon nearly doubling the growth of the category itself? The peak in interest may have something, or probably a lot, to do with the “Portnoy Effect.” As EJ Gallo, supplier of High Noon, announced two new flavors, Peach and Lime, they simultaneously launched a marketing partnership with Barstool Sports, a sports media platform and brand with over 66 million monthly unique users, and its founder, Dave Portnoy. Another factor that cannot be ignored is that consumers are increasingly aware of their health habits and want to opt for satisfying sips that won’t add too many pounds to their hips. Most seltzers are malt-based and a good portion are even gluten-free, but High Noon stands out in the crowd of cans because it is made with real vodka and real fruit juice (BTW, this is why it did not appear in our first article).
- With no added sugars and only 100 calories, your conscious won’t torment you when you crack a cold one open.
- People not only are being more health conscious with their drink choices, but also are looking for very light, flavorful options they can drink a few without feeling weighed down,” said Dave Larue, VP of Sales & Merchandising at ABC Fine Wine & Spirits,
“You can trace this trend back to the surge in sparkling water brands such as LaCroix, which then became a very popular mixer with vodka. It was just a matter of time before there were many sparkling ready-to-drink brands out there.” Most hard seltzers are lighter libations, but brands differ in how they flavor their spiked sparkling drink.
With High Noon, you get a truly untainted taste. Some seltzers can leave you with an aspartame-like aftertaste which really can spoil your satisfaction. High Noon is not made with artificial flavors or high-fructose corn syrup, so your lingering sip is more reminiscent of a freshly mixed cocktail. The authentic flavor is a major reason why The Tasting Panel named High Noon the best tasting hard seltzer in 2019.
Here are the flavors High Noon offers:

What alcohol does seltzer use?
All About the Base – The basic definition of a hard seltzer is seltzer water with alcohol. Where the alcohol comes from depends on the alcohol base you choose to work with. Many hard seltzers have a base of fermented cane sugar with added flavors, but seltzers can also be made with malted barley, grain neutral spirits, or wine.
- While the end result is a hard seltzer, the path you choose dictates a lot more than most people realize.
- One way to make a hard seltzer is to use a neutral malt base (NMB),
- Neutral malt base is an alcoholic base derived from malt that has been stripped of all its malt characteristics such as flavor, color, and aroma through carbon filtration, reverse osmosis, or another method.
A brewer creates a wort and then ferments it in a similar manner to beer. From there, you can add flavors and carbonation to make a hard seltzer like Press or Henry’s Hard Sparkling Water. A sugar brew base is made from “cold-brewed sugar” or “fermented cane sugar” from cane, beet, or corn.
- Non-malt sugars produce different flavors and textures than malt sugars that come from malts or malt extracts.
- Sugar brew tends to be more neutral in flavor when compared to malt base due to flavor contributions from the boiling process necessary to produce malt base.
- In addition, sugar, unlike malt which inherently has some color, is colorless.
This makes sugar-brews the perfect canvas for formulation. Products such as this, or those that are made from substitutes for malt and/or without hops are referred to as Internal Revenue Code Beers (IRC Beers). Grain neutral spirits (GNS) are distilled from a fermented mash of grain at or above 95% alcohol by volume (190 proof).
- Distillation is when a liquid is heated to create a vapor and then condensed back into a liquid again.
- The result is removing diluting components, which increases the proportion of alcohol content (measured as percent alcohol by volume (ABV)).
- Produced from grains such as corn, wheat, rye, or barley, GNS is called “neutral” because it is tasteless and odorless.
Wine is made from fermented grapes or other fruits. Other Than Standard (OTS) wine is typically wine made from orange peels or grape skins that have been filtered and treated for a neutral taste profile. Some examples of OTS wines include high fermentation wine, and heavy-bodied blending wine.

Does High Noon taste like vodka?
8. Kiwi: seltzer you’ll love or hate – Katherine Peach/Tasting Table Having eaten fresh kiwi earlier in the day (a chance bonus for our taste testers), we can confidently say that this hard seltzer tastes like a real, and quite pungent, kiwi. The kiwi fruit is a bit sweet, a bit tart, and tender at the first bite.
- While this sparkling carbonated beverage doesn’t recreate the texture of the fruit, High Noon does the Lord’s work to imbue the hard seltzer with the bite of the ripened, fuzz-covered fruit.
- We also found this is a love-it-or-hate-it scenario for most of the taste testers.
- One ardent critique of more of the flavors decided this was their favorite flavor.
Another tester complimented that this flavor tastes the most accurate to the natural fruit flavor; even as someone who doesn’t like kiwis, they could appreciate the overall presentation. The general consensus found Kiwi High Noon is still relatively mild, like all cans of vodka mixed with fruit juice and sparkling water.

Can malt whiskey get you drunk?
Does scotch get you drunk faster? – Many people wonder if Scotch can get you drunk faster than other types of alcoholic beverages. While the answer to this question is not straightforward, there are a few things to keep in mind. Firstly, the alcohol content of Scotch is generally higher than that of beer or wine.
This means that if you consume the same amount of alcohol from Scotch as you would from beer or wine, you will likely become intoxicated more quickly. Secondly, the way in which you consume your Scotch can also affect how quickly you become drunk. If you drink your Scotch quickly or on an empty stomach, it will be absorbed into your bloodstream more rapidly and its effects will be felt more quickly.
Finally, it’s important to remember that everyone’s body processes alcohol differently. Some people may become intoxicated more quickly than others even when consuming similar amounts of alcohol. In summary, while drinking Scotch may not necessarily get you drunk faster than other types of alcoholic beverages, its higher alcohol content and the way in which it is consumed can certainly play a role in how quickly its effects are felt.

Is a seltzer a beer?
Beer has been around for thousands of years, but it wasn’t until 1993 that the first hard seltzer was introduced. Hard seltzer sits somewhere in the middle between beer and traditional cocktails, and while it wasn’t too well-received originally, hard seltzers have skyrocketed in popularity over the past several years since the pandemic.
These two alcoholic beverages are similar in their creation, but there are many differences between the two. The true difference between the two beverages comes down to what is being fermented. Both beer and hard seltzer are brewed and fermented from a sugar source that when paired with yeast creates alcohol.
This process means hard seltzer somewhat surprisingly falls into the beer category as a “flavored malt beverage,” rather than into a pre-mix category. However, hard seltzer is made from fermenting cane sugar or sugar with water, whereas beer uses malted grains as the primary source of sugar.
Beer begins with malted grains like barley or wheat, which are mashed into hot water to extract the sugars resulting in a substance known as wort. Afterward, this liquid is boiled, hops are usually added, and then cooled. Finally, brewers transfer the brew to fermentation tanks and add yeast. The seltzer brewing process starts with fermenting pure sugar sources such as cane sugar, agave syrup, glucose, liquid invert sugar or honey in water.
The high-quality and viable strains of yeasts are used to convert sugar into alcohol and carbon dioxide. Next, the fermented alcohol is filtered thoroughly to get a colorless, odorless and flavorless alcohol base which acts like a blank canvas for the addition of natural or artificial flavoring agents.
- Afterward, this liquid goes through a carbonation process.
- With beer, there are aromatic notes of herbs, spices and tropical fruits from hops paired with malty, toasty and sweet aroma from malts.
- The type and quantity of malts, hops and yeasts are responsible for the overall flavor profile of a beer, which can range from sweet, balanced, malty and hoppy to clean and crisp.
Hard seltzer typically tastes like sparkling soda with subtle alcoholic content and a fruity flavor. One of the main selling points for hard seltzer is the low-carbohydrate and low-calorie profile of about 100 calories per can, whereas most beers is 150 calories or more.
