Most newcomers face a problem of a bad smelling moonshine. Craftsmen have come up with a few simple methods which allow solving this problem in a quick and effective way without wasting too much time and efforts. These are the most effective tested methods. Six methods of getting rid of the unpleasant smell:
Pour 2-3 grams of potassium permanganate powder per 3 liters of the finished product. Wait for the precipitate to settle. To speed up the process, just close the jar, shake it several times, and put it for 10-15 minutes in a heated bath at a temperature of 50-70°C. Add 8-10 grams of baking soda per 1 liter of moonshine, stir, and infuse for 20-30 minutes. Then stir again and leave for 10-12 hours. After this, drain the top liquid layer and remove the sediment at the bottom. Soda is good for getting rid of fusel oils that cause an unpleasant smell. Infuse your moonshine with orris root for 12 days (100 grams of ground root per 3 liters of moonshine). This old recipe is of little use to urban dwellers, since finding orris violets in stores is nearly impossible. However, this method is very effective. Freeze the moonshine in a metallic keg or glass container, Water will freeze near the edges of the container along with harmful substances. After the water turns into ice, pour the liquid moonshine into another container. If necessary, repeat the process several times. This method is simple and cheap, as the only thing you need is a refrigerator. Re-distillation. Dilute the moonshine with water to 15-20% and run another distillation, separating the finished product into fractions. This method is laborious and time-consuming. These blemishes notwithstanding, it’s also the most effective. Clearing with activated carbon, For this method, you’ll need birch charcoal (BAU-A and BAU-LV). Technology: grind the charcoal and roll it in several layers of cheesecloth. Filter the moonshine through the obtained filter.
Clearing with Carbon Still, activated carbon remains the most simple and environmentally-friendly method of clearing moonshine. It removes unpleasant smells and harmful substances. Let’s find out how you can clear your moonshine with carbon at home. Thanks to its pores, carbon absorbs molecules of a certain size, so it’s very important to choose the right type of coal.
For example, animal bone coal consists of micropores and can only absorb small molecules. Fusel oils and other harmful substances are composed of large molecules—that’s why this type of coal is not suitable in our case. Note: In order to clear the moonshine you’ll need activated carbon obtained by wood pyrolysis (decomposition brought about by high temperatures).
Most activated carbon tablets sold in pharmacies are made from animal bones with the use of binding additives (starch). Its ability to absorb harmful impurities is extremely low. Alternatively, there is a commercial product that I now use for clearing most of my Moonshine, which is the Still Spirits – EZ Filter System,
This is the simplest method of clearing Moonshine, the kit comes with everything you need, including purpose-built filtering containers, all you need to purchase ongoing is purpose-made carbon cartridges & washers, both of which are very cost-effective and save a lot of time in filtering your Moonshine.
Where to get Charcoal for Moonshine It can be purhcased from homebrewing shops. The most suitable are BAU-A and BAU-LV activated birch charcoal, and also KAU-A activated coconut coal, designed specifically for the liquor industry. Due to the presence of impurities, coal found in gas masks and other industrial devices should NOT be used! You can find carbon with large pores in many water filters. Birch charcoal is the best one Clearing Moonshine with carbon It’s pretty straightforward from here on: crush the carbon in a saucepan, then add to the moonshine (40-55%), 50 grams per liter. After this, infuse the mixture for a week in a sealed container.

Why does my moonshine smell?
During fermentation yeasts produce alcohol, CO2, and hundreds of other byproducts which have different smells. Some pleasant, others not so pleasant – like rotten egg or sulphur smell. This will not taint your distilled spirit and will disappear after distillation.
Does moonshine smell when distilling?
Mr. Moonshine A few of The Provider’s libations Distilling hard alcohol without a distillery license is illegal in Oregon and the U.S. From herein, any discussion of homemade spirits is purely theoretical. I may know a man who makes the most incredibly smooth scotch, icy clear vodka, flavorful limoncello and Drambuie, creamy gin, authentic rum.
Since I can’t refer to him by name, because he may not exist, I will simply call him “The Provider.” First, I’d like to knock out your image of a one-toothed moonshiner emerging from the back of his cabin waving a mason jar full of “sumin’ good fer yer grit.” A retired businessman and entrepreneur, my moonshiner lives in an elegant Victorian home of his own design, with his intelligent and discerning wife.
His still is located under his sculpting studio, where he creates modern classical pieces based on Greek mythology. The Provider has a meditative patience that’s required in creating artisan spirits: “Distillation is really the marriage of art and science,” he says.
- If you love to cook and experiment in the kitchen and are technically inclined, then distillation is for you.
- In the end it’s about the melding of flavors accomplished in a measured and calculated way over time.” It was the discerning wife who sparked The Provider’s interest in home distillation.
- She is of Scottish ancestry and every night enjoys a drink called a Rusty Nail, made from a mix of Drambuie and Scotch,” the Provider shares with me.
“I told her, ‘I’ll make it for you. How hard can it be?'” After several years of trial and error, The Provider confirms that the most important element of home distillation is, “making the cuts.” When you distill alcohol, there are three portions to separate out by taste and smell: the heads, body and tails.
- The heads are full of “compounds such as methanol and acetone.
- These have a terribly pungent smell and taste, so you will want to remove these.” Next comes the body.
- That’s the good stuff.
- Finally we get to the tails.
- These are full of congeners, or the chemicals that shape flavor and taste, and may add to your morning headache.
“As we descend further down into Dante’s Inferno, the congeners get nastier and nastier. The tails begin to smell like cardboard and paint thinner — not good,” The Provider says. “These are what’s responsible for the really bad hangovers.” So it’s not that you drank too much, it’s that you drank too many congeners.
- The most important thing in the flavoring of whiskey is to know how much of the heads and tails to add to the body.
- The more of these you add the longer the whiskey will have to remain in the barrel to become mellow, or you could ruin your efforts by adding too much.” It’s a decision that I would find incredibly stressful, but The Provider sees it differently.
“You arrive at a beautiful moment where you, yes you, have to decide. For some reason there is joy in that moment followed by months of anxious barrel tasting as the whiskey comes around.” Ultimately, it seems to be an incredibly satisfying hobby for The Provider, his wife and all their friends and neighbors.
“The pleasure of this is more than just the satisfaction of sitting in front of the fire sipping something you’ve made. It’s the joy of sharing with friends and, in the end, becoming part of the tradition that goes back thousands of years, from the ancient Greek experimenters to the monastic explorers, the Irish and the Scots and finally to the backwoods of the rural South.
Distillation has a proud history and you can be part of it.” Provided, that is, you don’t get caught. : Mr. Moonshine
How can I make my moonshine taste better?
Distill It Twice – Although it takes longer, distilling your moonshine twice will likely have a positive effect on its flavor. As long as you aren’t in a hurry to produce a batch of moonshine, run it through your still a second time. Doing so will help to filter out any impurities that may create an unpleasant flavor.
Does moonshine have a smell?
In my experience, moonshine has a tequila-like smell I don’t notice in other types of liquor.
How do you remove methanol from moonshine?
How to Remove Methanol from Moonshine – One way a commercial distiller would determine the presence of methanol is to monitor still temperature, If anything is produced by the still before wash temperature reaches 174 degrees, it’s methanol. A commercial distiller will discard it.
Again, methanol boils at a lower temperature than ethanol and will concentrate at the beginning of distillation runs. Additionally, commercial distillers have determined that simply discarding a standard amount per batch, based on batch size, is enough to keep things safe. The rule of thumb is to discard 1/3 of a pint jar for every 5 gallons of wash being distilled.
How much initial product to discard:
1 gallon batch – discard the first 2/3 of a shot glass 5 gallon batch – discard the first 1/3 of a pint jar 10 gallon batch – discard the first 3/4 of a pint jar
Regardless of still temp, it’s a good idea to always follow this rule of thumb. Methanol or not, the first stuff to come off the still tastes and smells like rubbing alcohol. It’s by far the worst stuff in the entire production run and it isn’t going to impress anyone. Kyle Brown is the owner of Clawhammer Supply, a small scale distillation and brewing equipment company which he founded in 2009. His passion is teaching people about the many uses of distillation equipment as well as how to make beer at home. When he isn’t brewing beer or writing about it, you can find him at his local gym or on the running trail.
Can you get drunk from smelling moonshine?
The Full Story – The old-fashioned way of getting drunk is simple: drink too much alcohol. A novel way people have been consuming alcohol? “Smoke” or “vape” your alcohol instead. Inhaling alcohol vapors can harm the brain and lungs and intoxicate someone very quickly, so it is very important to be aware of the dangers associated with it.
When people “smoke” or “vape” alcohol, they do so by heating it up or pouring it over dry ice. There are even devices marketed to young people to make vaping alcohol seem refined and sophisticated. This makes a vapor that they inhale into their lungs. Inhaling alcohol vapor causes a rapid and intense “high.” Absorption through the lungs provides almost instant delivery of the alcohol to the bloodstream and the brain; the effects are felt very quickly.
Small amounts of inhaled alcohol may make a person much more intoxicated than drinking the alcohol instead. Vaping alcohol bypasses the digestive system, so some believe that alcohol calories are not absorbed. This claim makes smoking alcohol very attractive to teens and young adults that think they can get “buzzed” without consuming calories from drinking it.
The increased absorption of alcohol can harm the brain. This is a particular hazard to teens and young adults, because their brains have not finished developing yet. Because excessive drinking of alcohol can irritate the stomach and cause vomiting, this mechanism can limit the amount ultimately consumed by preventing more absorption. Vaping alcohol, however, bypasses the digestive tract and therefore would not provide the same warning signs (e.g. vomiting) that could help indicate to someone they’ve consumed too much. You might not realize it if too much is inhaled, and the effects can be very serious, including passing out, decreased breathing, and injuries from falls or drunk-driving accidents. The heated or ultra-cooled (by dry ice) vapor itself may also cause lung injury that could lead to long term breathing problems.
So far, no human studies have been published about the health effects of inhaling alcohol. (There are studies that demonstrate that alcohol is absorbed from the bloodstream after inhalation.) Studies in rats show several problems.
In rats, chronic alcohol inhalation leads to more and more alcohol-seeking behaviors. It also increases anxiety behaviors in rats. It can be addictive. Inhaling alcohol can cause changes in the brain; rats need higher and higher doses to produce the same drunk feeling. An alcohol withdrawal syndrome can also occur. This causes symptoms of anxiety, tremors, sweating, chills, and seizures.
Take Home Message:
Alcohol can be absorbed into your bloodstream by inhaling alcohol vapors. Vapors are produced by heating up alcohol or pouring it over dry ice. People who inhale alcohol vapors get drunk very quickly, because the alcohol goes straight to the brain. Heated or super-cooled alcohol vapor can injure the lungs.

Can you drink pure moonshine?
Methanol Risks – While the flammability of the moonshine distillation process is dangerous in and of itself, the health effects of moonshine-methanol consumption pose an even bigger threat. More people have died from drinking moonshine than by any explosions at stills, despite the few old and handmade stills that are left.
- A major risk of drinking moonshine is methanol blindness.
- Detecting methanol upon the first step is impossible, and consuming more of it will simply get the person drunker.
- However, it’s eventually metabolized as its toxic metabolite, formic acid, in the body, which can have an extremely harmful effect.
Just 10 milliliters (ml) of methanol is all it takes to cause permanent optic and partial nerve damage, if not complete blindness. As little as 30 ml of methanol is lethal, and, for reference, a standard shot glass in the U.S. holds 40 ml. Old stills use car radiators during the distilling process, which often contain lead soldering and remnants of antifreeze glycol products that could contaminate and add toxins to the moonshine.
Larger batches of moonshine are more likely to contain methanol. Because methanol is vaporized or evaporated at a lower temperature than alcohol, the first liquid produced by the distillation process usually contains methanol. While moonshiners have adopted new ways to discard methanol, some moonshiners will actually add it back into the batch to make the drink more potent.
However, because these processes aren’t regulated, there’s no way of knowing whether the illicit alcohol actually contains any methanol.
Why can’t you drink the first batch of moonshine?
Drinking Your First Batch – If this is your first time making ‘shine and it tastes weird, it’s probably because you haven’t worn in your still yet. You should always discard your first batch—metallic residue could seep into your product. Your second batch will taste a lot purer.
Does moonshine improve with age?
So, you want to age your own whiskey, huh? No matter if you made it yourself (having obtained the appropriate permits, of course), got it from a friend who made it, or bought some white whiskey at the store, I would certainly highly recommend aging your own! Aging any whiskey, moonshine, brandy, or other spirits can add a lot of flavor, complexity, depth, and smoothness to the final spirit.
- Not to mention that having a barrel sitting on your bar counter is a great conversation piece! However, there may be a lot more to aging your own whiskey than you think.
- Believe it or not, whiskey (and any distilled spirit, for that matter) comes out of the still clear as an ice cold mountain stream.
All of that beautiful color that the spirit in your glass has is the result of something that happened after it was distilled. It can pick up these colors from oak, charred oak, fruits, and botanicals. So let’s start there, with the pure unadulterated white whiskey.
Does moonshine get better with age?
Summary – Moonshine cannot really expire. The flavor and characteristics of your moonshine can be changed if it is exposed to light, warmth, or air but it won’t become undrinkable. Even an open bottle of flavored moonshine will last for many years before it will start to go off.
What happens if you distill moonshine twice?
Dilution before Re-Distillation Anyone who has ever done a double or even triple distillation of spirits will know that every time you run the spirits through the still it gets “stronger” – the purity increases, the ABV% percentage rises. Whatever expression your prefer.
Most Distillers (especially those that did their training with us) would also be aware (based on the ) that the higher your starting point ABV in the boiler, the higher your average ABV will be in your distillate. Intuitively though, it would therefore make sense to put the Distillate in at full strength when Re-Distilling it, in order to make sure it comes out as strong as possible.
Makes sense? Right? Unfortunately the obvious answer is not always the right answer. Before we look at this more in-depth, let us first consider why we Re-Distill, and how it works.
Is it bad to inhale moonshine?
Inhaling Alcohol: Dangerous Trend, Expert Says Some college students are experimenting with inhaling alcohol by pouring it over dry ice and “smoking” the vapors, according to an expert who says the practice is dangerous. Young adults are inhaling alcohol to get high without ingesting calories, the reports.
- Dr. Harris Stratyner, Regional Clinical Vice President of Caron Treatment Centers in New York, told the newspaper, “When you inhale alcohol, it goes directly into the lungs and circumnavigates the liver.
- The liver is what metabolizes alcohol, but when you inhale it, it goes directly from the lungs to the brain.” The practice is more likely to lead to deadly alcohol poisoning than drinking liquor, he said.
Inhaling alcohol vapors can dry out the nasal passages and mouth, making a person more susceptible to infection, Stratyner added. “One of the things that prevents alcohol poisoning is that you usually vomit,” he noted. “When you circumvent the stomach and go straight to the lungs, you don’t have that ability.” Inhaling alcohol has become more popular in the past year and a half, Stratyner said.
How can you tell if moonshine is bad?
Foul Taste – If your container of moonshine is stored and sealed, it won’t hurt you to take a sip and test the flavor (assuming it was distilled correctly, that is). Moonshine that “goes bad” will have a foul taste, even if it’s not technically harmful.
What should good moonshine smell like?
What Does Moonshine Taste Like? – They say it’s delicious and tastes like a breath of fresh air. While some say it has a taste similar to whiskey and rum 151. Typically, its flavor is stronger than other liquors, and a traditionally prepared moonshine may have an earthy taste. Have you tasted rum 151? If so, you can already guess the burning sensation of drinking moonshine.
- However, there are several manufacturers today, and each produces its own version of moonshine.
- As such, this alcoholic beverage can come in flavors like sweet, spicy, and fruity.
- Similarly, when you drink this alcohol, you can taste a hint of corn and white oak.
- While some say it has the flavor of vanilla or tastes like grappa and cider.
If you enjoy beverages with fruity flavors, you might enjoy drinking moonshine, but it may not suit your palate if you’re not a fan of such tastes. Besides its taste, moonshine has a mild odor and slightly smells like corn. Also, if you’re dealing with home-brewed moonshine, don’t drink it if the alcohol produces a pungent chemical smell, as it may be contaminated and can be toxic.
It may even make you feel nauseous. Though most people think that moonshine tastes like vodka as they’re both transparent and contain high levels of alcohol, that’s not the case. They’re two different drinks with varying tastes and are processed differently. Moreover, most people might not enjoy the intense taste of moonshine as it’s very alcoholic and will find an alternative option to make it more palatable.
So let’s find out how to drink it.
What kills you in moonshine?
Consuming Methanol In Moonshine – Upon first sip, the dangerous potential of methanol is undetectable. It will simply get people drunker. However, after it is metabolized, the methanol can have an extremely harmful effect in someone’s body.10 milliliters (ml) of methanol is all it takes to permanently damage the optic nerve and cause partial, if not complete, blindness.30 ml of methanol is lethal.
- For reference, and standard shot glass in the United States holds 40 ml.
- If less than 10 ml of methanol is consumed then the worst someone will experience is a hangover, (albeit, quite possibly the worst hangover of their life).
- However, if someone consumes 10 ml or more of methanol, even split up among drinks, that can be enough to cause permanent damage or kill them.
While there are processes today to discard the toxic alcohol that is visually indistinguishable from water, some illegal Moonshiners will add methanol back in to provide a stronger potency. Obviously, without regulation, there is no way to know if illicit alcohol contains methanol.
What neutralizes methanol?
Methanol poisoning can be treated with fomepizole, or if unavailable, ethanol may be used. Both drugs act to reduce the action of alcohol dehydrogenase on methanol by means of competitive inhibition.
How do alcoholics hide the smell?
Hiding the amount they drink – Wine boxes or opaque bottles make it hard to tell how much has gone from a bottle. Also, clear spirits like vodka can easily be replaced with water to trick someone into thinking less has been drunk. People who are secret drinking have been known to use shampoo bottles, flasks and water bottles to conceal alcohol.
Is it halal to smell alcohol?
Shariah Scholar, Advisory Member, Islamic Finance Expert, EdTech – FinTech Advisor – Published Nov 16, 2016 When the revelation of the Quran began, drinking alcoholic beverages was not uncommon. Many of the people of the time of Prophet (S.A.W) also drank prior to the prohibition in the Quran.
- The prohibition came in three stages.
- The first revelation is presented in the Quran as thus: They question thee about strong drink and games of chance.
- Say: In both is great sin, and some utility for men; but the sin of them is greater than their usefulness.
- And they ask thee what they ought to spend.
Say: That which is superfluous. Thus Allah maketh plain to you (His) revelations, that haply ye may reflect. Al Baqara, Verse 219 In this verse, Muslims were informed that drinking Khamr is a great sin. It says that alcohol might have some benefit, although it imparts greater sin than benefit.
The next revelation on the subject of alcohol was as follows: Oh ye who believe! Draw not near unto prayer when ye are drunken, till ye know that which ye utter, nor when ye are polluted save when journeying upon the road, till ye have bathed. And if ye be ill, or on a journey, or one of you cometh from the closet, or ye have touched women, and ye find not water, then go to high clean soil and rub your faces and your hands (therewith).
Lo! Allah is Benign, Forgiving. Al Nisa, Verse 43 In this revelation, Muslims are told not to offer their prayers while they are under the influence of alcohol, which will prevent them from understanding what they recite or listen to. Because prayer is prescribed five times a day, at specific perform the required prayers on time in a sober condition.
- The verse still did not clearly say that alcohol was prohibited, so some companions continued to drink.
- Finally, a clear command was issued as follows, prohibiting intoxicants and several other actions: O ye who believe! Strong drink and games of chance and idols and divining arrows are only an infamy of Satan’s handiwork.
Leave it aside in order that ye may succeed. Al Mai’dah, Verse 90 Satan seeketh only to cast among you enmity and hatred by means of strong drink and games of chance, and to turn you from remembrance of Allah and from (His) worship. Will ye then have done? Al Mai’dah, Verse 91 Obey Allah and obey the messenger, and beware! But if ye turn away, then know that the duty of Our messenger is only plain conveyance (of the message).
Al Mai’dah, Verse 92 This was the final word on alcohol as Khamr — it must be avoided. There is no ambiguity: consumption of alcoholic drinks in any form is totally prohibited. Although alcoholic drinks are prohibited for consumption, alcohol derived from grapes, dates, and raisins is also considered najis or unclean.
Use of alcohol from these sources is not allowed even for nonfood uses, such as in cosmetics, perfumes, and personal care products. So alcohol is mainly Haram as a food or unclean for other uses if it is from traditional sources of grapes and dates. Alcohol if made from halal sources can be converted into halal products.
In contrast, pork is from pig, a Haram source, and all products and ingredients derived from pork remain Haram. Alcoholic beverages of any type are prohibited for Muslims. The use of alcoholic beverages in preparing or producing food items or drinks is also prohibited. Hence, eating or drinking products made with alcoholic beverages, such as spiked punch, or cakes containing brandy, are not permitted.
Grain alcohol or synthetic alcohol may be used in the production of food ingredients as long as it is evaporated to a final level of more than 0.5% in food ingredients and 0.1% in consumer products. These guidelines are practised by some of the halal-certification organisations, whereas others follow somewhat stricter guidelines.
Alcohol contained in a natural product may be concentrated into its essence, thereby concentrating the amount of alcohol. Most halal-certifying bodies accept small amounts of such inherent alcohol, generally less than 0.1% and sometimes up to 0.5%. Use of alcohol in any concentration in an industrial process is acceptable due to technical reasons where other viable alternatives are not available. The final alcohol content in the product of such industrial application must be reduced to less than 0.5% by evaporation or conversion to acetic acid. This means flavors that will be used in food production must not contain more than 0.5% alcohol to qualify as halal. Some countries, however, do accept amounts higher than 0.5%, whereas others have an even lower cut off. Addition of any amount of fermented alcoholic drinks such as beer, wine, or liquor to any food product or drink renders the product haram. However, if the essence is extracted from these products and alcohol is reduced to negligible amount, most halal-certifying agencies and importing countries accept the use of such essences in food products. Consultation with proper authorities or end users can clarify this issue. Consumer products with added ingredients that contain alcohol must have less than 0.1% alcohol, including both added and any natural alcohol, to qualify as halal. At this level, one cannot taste the alcohol, smell the alcohol, or see the alcohol, a criterion generally applied for the impurities. This reasoning has been established by the Islamic Food and Nutrition Council of America. Other groups may accept more lenient or stricter guidelines than these. The food industry should consult its customer companies or halal-approval agencies for their exact standard.
What are the symptoms of bad moonshine?
Signs and symptoms – The initial symptoms of methanol intoxication include central nervous system depression, headache, dizziness, nausea, lack of coordination, and confusion. Sufficiently large doses cause unconsciousness and death. The initial symptoms of methanol exposure are usually less severe than the symptoms from the ingestion of a similar quantity of ethanol.
Once the initial symptoms have passed, a second set of symptoms arises, from 10 to as many as 30 hours after the initial exposure, that may include blurring or complete loss of vision, acidosis, and putaminal hemorrhages, an uncommon but serious complication. These symptoms result from the accumulation of toxic levels of formate in the blood, and may progress to death by respiratory failure,
Physical examination may show tachypnea, and eye examination may show dilated pupils with hyperemia of the optic disc and retinal edema,

How do you know if you drank bad moonshine?
Side Effects From Drinking Moonshine – Moonshine alcohol percentage usually contains alcohol by volume (ABV) of 40% but can range up to 80%. Moonshine does go bad, and you can determine this by taking a small sip which will have a foul taste or taste worse than you expected. Drinking moonshine that is old or contaminated can result in adverse effects. Here are some moonshine effects:
Seizures Vomiting Nerve damage Pale and cold skin Irregular breathing Low body temperature Permanent brain damage
Consumption of 10 ml or more of methanol is lethal, meaning that drinking just 10 milliliters of methanol-containing moonshine is fatal. Overdosing on any type of alcohol, especially methanol moonshine poisoning, can cause alcohol poisoning. Immediate professional medical attention is needed to treat methanol poisoning.
