UK and Irish keg supply structure – The beer vessel supply structure in the UK and Ireland is quite different, whilst the couplers for kegs have been largely standardised to sankey, grundy and interbrew, a couple of others exist such as UEC and U-Type, however these are much less common.
- The kegs themselves are made from stainless steel or aluminium.
- The standard keg size is 11 imperial gallons (50 litres/88 imperial pints) and the vast majority of keg beers are supplied in this keg size.
- There are also smaller 30 litre (≈52.7926 imperial pints) kegs usually reserved for more specialist and premium European beers.
A number of manufacturers also produce 18 imperial gallon (81.82 litres/144 imperial pints) and 22 imperial gallon (100 litres/176 imperial pints) kegs, however owing to their size they are not as popular, as manual handling is seen by some to be difficult, and as a result they tend to be used only for large-scale events and bars with high output.

How tall is a big keg?
Sixth Barrel Kegs (1/6 BBL Kegs) – Sixth barrel kegs, sometimes called Sixtels, Torpedo Kegs, or Log Kegs, are smaller sankey-style kegs that are a common beer keg used in a dual-tap kegerator and for homebrewing. These kegs are commonly the ones that homebrewers upgrade to when they discontinue using cornelius kegs.
They’re the same exact keg as a standard half-barrel sanke keg, except that they hold 5.16 gallons (approximately the size of a standard Cornelius keg). Because they are sanke kegs, a sixtel keg requires a sankey coupler (most available in the U.S. are compatible with a D-style coupler ) to use with a home kegerator.
Sixth barrel kegs are 23⅜” tall and 9¼” in diameter. They weigh about 14lbs empty and the full keg weight of a sixth barrel keg is about 58lbs. They hold 5.16 gallons (661 ounces), which is ⅙ the capacity of a beer barrel. This means that each sixth barrel keg holds 55 12-oz cans/bottles or 41⅓ pints of beer.
A new sixth barrel sanke keg costs between $100 and $140 online and are commonly used by home brewers. Beer purchased by the sixth barrel keg ranges from about $65 to $85 for domestics, but craft beers can range from $75 all the way up to $200 per sixth barrel keg. Please note that purchasing beer by the keg does not mean you bought the keg.
The keg deposit you pay when purchasing kegged beer does not entitle you to the keg, and keg theft is a huge problem for craft breweries. Please return your kegs!
How tall is a 5 liter keg?
5 Liter KegLand Mini Keg The KegLand Stainless Steel Mini Beer Kegs are specifically designed for home brewing/growler dispensing. They are suited to small batches and suited to people who want to fit them into their home refrigerators. You can naturally carbonate using priming sugars or force carbonate and serve your beer with the optional ball lock lid (item P07, see at right).
- They come with a silicone gasket sealed stainless threaded lid, so you can fill them with beer and let them naturally carbonate, or carbonate as needed with the optional P07 ball lock lid.
- You will be given a chance to buy this lid (you do not need a Ball Lock Lid for every keg) when you put this in your cart.
These fit into a standard domestic refrigerator. The optional Ball Lock lid for these kegs use a flexible silicone dip tube the kegs can also be dispensed on their side or upright. The flexible silicone dip tube of lid P07 is heavier than beer, and will sink to the bottom even if the kegs are on their side.
Egs are equipped with a 30 PSI relief valve, and have a maximum pressure of 45 PSI. Kegland Mini Kegs use the gold standard acid bath electrolosis to pacify the 304 grade stainless steel making the more resistant to rust than any other mini keg on the market. These are the only mini keg that uses a special robotic technique to weld the kegs from the inside out.
This means KegLand gets a superior welding finish that is more sanitary than any other mini keg available. Although there are many other mini kegs that come from China simply none have the quality and finish as the genuine KegLand minikegs. See the video below for the KegLand welding story.

How big is a 50lt keg?
How many beers in a keg? – We get this question constantly! And there is a huge amount of variation in the answer. To start with kegs come in all shapes ad sizes, the most common for large commercial breweries and bars is the 50L variety which holds approximately 150 stubbies (330ml bottles).
The range of kegs that we at iKegger stock are generally used by home brewers or people who want to get them filled at breweries to have beer on tap at home (or by using one of our jockey boxes you can have 2 x 5L kegs on tap anywhere !) These come in a wide variety of sizes: 19L “Corny” keg (57 stubbies) 10L “Mandingo” Keg (30 stubbies) 5L “Choad” Keg (15 stubbies) 4L “Johnson” Keg (12 stubbies) 2L “Bieber” Keg (6 stubbies) For people who don’t want to invest potentially thousands of dollars into a full kegerator setup these mini kegs are great for either home brewing or filling at your local brewery / bar.
They slide easily into your standard fridge door or lying down on a shelf and the shorter 5L ones are perfect for the esky. They weigh a lot less and take up a lot less space than the same amount of beer in bottles. They also have the benefit of not being breakable and if you get our “Growlers” they are built like a thermos and once you fill them with cold beer you can have it on tap anywhere without the need to lug around ice or eskies! They will keep your beer, cider, mixed drinks or even nitro coffee ice cold for up to 12 hours without any sort of refrigeration! Of course then there is the whole “what’s a beer?” question! For the above we have used a standard “stubbie” which is 330ml There are larger “stubbies” which hold 375ml There are ponies / middies holding around 250ml There are schooners & pots holding around 425ml There is American pints holding about 475ml and British pints holding 525ml There are “long necks” which hold 750ml and “squealers” holding 920ml Don’t even get me started on all the regional variations! My advice, get some mini kegs and drink from the tap.
What are the dimensions of a 20 Litre beer keg?
All the kegs on the marketplace require an A-type coupler. If you have one then all you need to do is add the brew you want to your cart, add the keg bond when checking out and you are good to go. If you don’t have a coupler, we have couplers that connect via push fittings or home brew ball lock connectors! A-type coupler with ball lock and push fittings Kegs are collected from the brewery when you pick up your first brew, so you don’t need to hand over a swap keg when collecting your first full keg. Couplers are posted, however if you are in Sydney and are in dire need please let us know – we can drop off the coupler to the brewery where you are collecting your keg so you can get it all at once.
- Hell yeah, the couplers come with push fitting connectors and with ball lock connectors so they can be used with ball lock connectors.20L Kegs are 57cms tall (69cm with a coupler) and 24cms wide.10L Kegs are 37cms tall (49cm with a coupler) and 24cms wide.
- Dam straight you can, if you want a 10L today and a 20L next time just swap away.
Only catch is that you need to go to a brewery that offers both sizes when doing a change up. Just the size, the same coupler works with the 10L & 20L kegs. So you’ve got a normal fridge you’d like to use. Well the good news is there’s a few options. With the simple set up options, you can just throw everything into a fridge but if you are keen to get your hands dirty then check out the DIY kegerator kits from iKegger or Kegland. There’s no hard and fast rule but you’d ideally want to drink beer and other alcoholic beverages within a couple of months; Kombucha can stay good for 6 months. So if you normally have a 6 pack in a week then go the 20L keg, otherwise test out the 10L first – you can always swap the 10L for a 20L later or vice versa.
It boils down to the size of your fridge. If you have heaps of room then go the tap, it’s easier to clean, fun to use and the sexiest option. If you only have enough room for the keg then go with the gun, it is super fun too and gives you the ability to stand and pour even if the keg is down low.20L Kegs are 57cms tall (69cm with a coupler) and 24cms wide.
The 20L kegs have 53 cans in them, so 2.2 cases.10L Kegs are 37cms tall (49cm with a coupler) and 24cms wide. The 10L kegs equate to 26 cans in them, so basically a case. Tip : best to allow a bit of extra headroom above the keg for wiggling things in and getting your hand on the tap.
- On the tap front, the black handle can be cut or grinded down if needed.
- The GasGuyz make it ridiculously easy but if they don’t deliver to your hood the other options are a Soda Stream cylinder from Coles or Woolies.
- Another good option, especially if you’ve got a cylinder you need filled is Speed Gas – they also sell cylinders too.

How big are restaurant kegs?
The Official Blog of JES Restaurant Equipment Over the years, keg sizes have become a somewhat confusing topic for those looking to purchase their own and for their bar, restaurant, or residence. After centuries of use in the preparation and storage of alcoholic beverages, the essentially arbitrary sizing system of barrels and kegs has become a bit cumbersome, and the exact meaning of “keg” during a conversation varies depending on the interpretation of the person with which you are speaking.
Although keg sizes are not officially standardized from one location to the next, there are generally accepted regional standards that will help make selecting appropriately-sized kegs a simple endeavor. In the United States, a “barrel” of beer is about 31 U.S. gallons. The keg (with an etymology meaning – quite literally – “small barrel”) is simply a smaller portion of the typical barrel.
A standard keg measures ½ barrel, or about 15.5 U.S. gallons. This is easy enough to remember, but where things tend to get a little bit more complicated is in smaller sized kegs. In addition to the literal, size-based names (1/2 keg, 1/6 barrel, etc.) of smaller kegs, most of them also have several nicknames, and keeping up with who calls what keg which name can make keeping track of the sizes a confusing task.
- Aside from memorizing all of the nicknames, one way to avoid misunderstandings is to keep in mind that terms such as “half keg” refer to a division of the standard keg, not a division of the original barrel size.
- In other words, a “half keg” is equivalent to a quarter barrel, and should not be confused with the original half barrel size of a standard keg.
Physical size is also important to consider when choosing kegs for your direct draw equipment. Most kegs are limited to a height of about 23-1/8 inches, and most beer units are sized to accommodate. Diameter is more critical, however, as some dispensers are sized to fit several smaller kegs and have shelving that may prevent the storage and use of a single, larger keg.
