How many litres is a keg?
UK and Irish keg supply structure – The beer vessel supply structure in the UK and Ireland is quite different, whilst the couplers for kegs have been largely standardised to sankey, grundy and interbrew, a couple of others exist such as UEC and U-Type, however these are much less common.
The kegs themselves are made from stainless steel or aluminium. The standard keg size is 11 imperial gallons (50 litres/88 imperial pints) and the vast majority of keg beers are supplied in this keg size. There are also smaller 30 litre (≈52.7926 imperial pints) kegs usually reserved for more specialist and premium European beers.
A number of manufacturers also produce 18 imperial gallon (81.82 litres/144 imperial pints) and 22 imperial gallon (100 litres/176 imperial pints) kegs, however owing to their size they are not as popular, as manual handling is seen by some to be difficult, and as a result they tend to be used only for large-scale events and bars with high output.

How long does a 50L keg last?
How Long Does Draft Beer Remain Fresh? – There is no one hard and fast rule for how long a keg of draft beer will stay fresh. This is especially true for craft beers because different styles of beer last longer than others. A good rule of thumb is that the shelf life for a keg of pasteurized beer is about 90-120 days (or 3-4 months), and unpasteurized draft beer will last about 45-60 days (or 6-8 weeks) when stored at the proper temperature.
- Many import and domestic beers are pasteurized.
- If you’re unsure whether or not your beer has been pasteurized, then treat it like it is unpasteurized.
- An important thing to remember is that countdown starts the day your keg is filled at the brewery, not when you tap it or buy it.
- One of the first things you should do when you pick up a keg is to check is the label to see if it has a “born on” date or expiration date.
If the beer in your keg is passed its expiration date, then we wouldn’t recommend drinking it.
Is keg beer cheaper?
Why Buy a Kegerator? – When you buy a kegerator for your home, you’re not only able to conveniently store large amounts of cold draft beer, but you can also save approximately 40-60% in costs, compared to buying the same volume of beer in cans or bottles. Consider that the average cost for a standard half barrel keg of Budweiser is approximately $100.
A standard keg contains 15.5 gallons, or 1,984 ounces. A case of Budweiser contains twenty-four 12oz. cans (288 total ounces) and costs about $23. To get the same volume by ounce as a standard keg, you would need to buy seven cases of Budweiser for about $160 – resulting in over $55 in savings per keg.
This means by the time you purchase your tenth keg, you will have completely offset the cost of your kegerator in savings, breaking even while enjoying high-quality draft beer at home. The savings can be even greater for some brands of beers, as well as various keg sizes,
Average Cost of Half Barrel Keg | Average Cost of Case | No. Cases Needed by Volume to Equal Keg | Savings Per Keg ($USD) | No. Kegs Needed to Break Even on Kegerator | |

Keep the beer flowing by refilling your Heineken mini keg. The popular 5L Heineken mini keg is most often thrown away after one use – the common belief is that the mini keg cannot be reused. Home brewers, however, can take advantage of this mini keg to create a convenient kegerator for prepared home brew. Easy to transport, you can then share your home brew with friends almost anywhere.
How many servings in a 50L keg?
How many beers in a keg? – We get this question constantly! And there is a huge amount of variation in the answer. To start with kegs come in all shapes ad sizes, the most common for large commercial breweries and bars is the 50L variety which holds approximately 150 stubbies (330ml bottles).
The range of kegs that we at iKegger stock are generally used by home brewers or people who want to get them filled at breweries to have beer on tap at home (or by using one of our jockey boxes you can have 2 x 5L kegs on tap anywhere !) These come in a wide variety of sizes: 19L “Corny” keg (57 stubbies) 10L “Mandingo” Keg (30 stubbies) 5L “Choad” Keg (15 stubbies) 4L “Johnson” Keg (12 stubbies) 2L “Bieber” Keg (6 stubbies) For people who don’t want to invest potentially thousands of dollars into a full kegerator setup these mini kegs are great for either home brewing or filling at your local brewery / bar.
They slide easily into your standard fridge door or lying down on a shelf and the shorter 5L ones are perfect for the esky. They weigh a lot less and take up a lot less space than the same amount of beer in bottles. They also have the benefit of not being breakable and if you get our “Growlers” they are built like a thermos and once you fill them with cold beer you can have it on tap anywhere without the need to lug around ice or eskies! They will keep your beer, cider, mixed drinks or even nitro coffee ice cold for up to 12 hours without any sort of refrigeration! Of course then there is the whole “what’s a beer?” question! For the above we have used a standard “stubbie” which is 330ml There are larger “stubbies” which hold 375ml There are ponies / middies holding around 250ml There are schooners & pots holding around 425ml There is American pints holding about 475ml and British pints holding 525ml There are “long necks” which hold 750ml and “squealers” holding 920ml Don’t even get me started on all the regional variations! My advice, get some mini kegs and drink from the tap.
