Why did Tanked go out of business?
Animal Planet Confirms Tanked Is Cancelled After Spouse Stars Deal With Domestic Abuse Charges Tanked has been – wait for it – tanked after 15 seasons, but supposedly not because of the recent behind-the-scenes drama between two married stars. confirmed the show will not be returning after the Season 15 finale aired in December. Paul Schur, VP communications/media relations, shared a statement: After 15 fantastic seasons, the series came to a natural end late last year.
“A natural end,” he emphasized in a statement to, rather than killing off the show because of the recent drama between married stars Heather and Wayde King. The series followed aquarium makers Acrylic Tank Manufacturing, owned by Brett Raymer and Wayde King. Heather King is married to Wayde and she’s also Brett’s sister.
Heather and Brett’s father Irwin Raymer was also part of the show. According to, Heather was arrested last week in Las Vegas for allegedly slapping and kicking her husband Wayde in the stomach after a heated argument. Wayde also apparently claimed she had him hanging out the window of her car as she drove away (!) but she denied that.
- TMZ’s sources said she did admit to slapping Wayde, telling the cops it was because he wouldn’t let her leave a room.
- She was booked for misdemeanor domestic violence, but was released from custody.
- Just days after that incident, Heather King filed for divorce from Wayde.
- They had been married for 21 years and have two children together.
‘s Tanked sources said the decision to the show was actually made months before the domestic violence incident and divorce proceedings. Why did Animal Planet only announce the end of the show now? Probably because the network was asked about it in the wake of this drama.
- Otherwise, the show probably would’ve had a more quiet end.
- Tanked premiered back in 2011 and has aired more than 150 episodes across 15 seasons.
- Some of those seasons were short – just 6 episodes – while one went as long as 16 episodes.
- The final season that ran from November to December 2018 included 10 episodes.
In 2015, Tanked followed and his Egyptian-themed room for his new grouper tank. Here’s a with more than 1.5 million views, showing Shaq as he finally got to see the results: Tanked ‘s ratings were said to be dropping, and it looks like it was averaging less than half a million viewers an episode, but it must’ve been doing something right to last for 15 seasons on Animal Planet.
- That’s a lot of aquariums.
- But it’s not always easy to work so closely with your family members, especially a spouse.
- Look at Christina and Tarek El Moussa.
- The Flip or Flop couple ended up divorcing, although they decided to on their HGTV series.
- Chip and Joanna Gaines seem to be making it work.
- They are done with Fixer Upper but recently for a return to TV.
Tanked may be gone, but there’s still plenty of TV to watch during midseason 2019, so check out for details. Your Daily Blend of Entertainment News : Animal Planet Confirms Tanked Is Cancelled After Spouse Stars Deal With Domestic Abuse Charges

Then get out your camera for a shot of yourself sitting on Brett’s perpetually messy desk, and see some of the amazing tanks ATM has created, some of which are shaped like pyramids and automobiles. You’ll return to the starting point
- We took the ATM tour because we enjoy watching the show. Overall the tour was disappointing. There are several standard aquarium type tanks, with fish, near the entrance but no fancy tanks. The tour was basically just a walk through the facility, with a little story telling. A must see if you’re into aquariums Best tour ever! I met “The General” and he’s one of the coolest dudes I met. All sorts of building tank designs and alot of exotic birds. Great toour. Surprise visit by The General We came to look at the showroom because of the reality TV show. The General was there giving tours. He told us how they started, took us around and answered our questions. They also work with birds. We saw drawings of tank designs coming up and tanks they have acquired from bankruptcy or donation because they couldn’t take care of them. Since we were visiting on the Saturday after 4th of July, we didn’t have high hopes of seeing any of the stars. However, we were given a friendly tour with funny anecdotes. The place is basically a huge warehouse. Wade, the General and Redneck were working that day. This was part of the Anna Bananie tour for Pawn Stars. It was so awesome!!! Entire tour was amazing and I highly recommend spending a few of your vacation time doing it! Vegas Tour Disappointment Wonderful on TV only. Overpriced and unclean. Walking tours only accept cash, obviously so they can pocket it. First impressions are key and this place rates a 3 at best, only because the staff let’s you take pictures of them and puts their signature on any item you purchase.
- She was very informative, funny and personable.
- Her explanation of the trials and tribulations of getting the show off of the ground and up and running was good.a lot more difficult than I expected it would have been.
- We got to meet bert the artist who hand draws all of the tanks for client approval, saw the drawings of confirmed and proposed tanks for thus season (not at liberty to mention what’s in the works.if you want to know take the tour.lol).
- The day we visited they were actually filming parts for the show.
- It was fun seeing Wade going About his business while we were on our tour and thenhe made the time to sign merch and take photos with anyone who wanted one.
- We also took pictures with the general, saw Heather, and a couple of the other stars.
At most it’s worth $10 definitely not $30 or even $20 for locals. Trisha the tour host needs to where a microphone and we need to see more built over the top aquariums to view. Forget the birds.we come for fish and flash. The Auto Aquuarium rocks but that’s it. Its Vegas after all and you’ve had plenty of time to stage and rock the decor.
Even your gift shop is dusty unpainted, and sadly dated. Suggestion visit Pro Bass Stores for presentation and decor. They should have their own show, best I have ever visited in Nevada and all of California. I am well traveled and a prior host and tour guide from Vegas.Learn and do for all of us fish and aquarium appreciators. Interesting to see manufacturing plant. Had my picture taken with the General. He has a great sense of humor. They made you feel like part of the family not a tourist Enjoyed the tour and the stories that were told. After watching the show “tanked” for years we decided to take the behind the scenes tour. Victor greeted us outside and sent us in the right direction. Brett met with the group, posed for pictures with ever one and explained what the tour involved. Trish was our tour guide.
We were on the shop floor and saw the processing steps of tank making. The sheer wait of the acrylic panels is unbelievable. Lastly we got to meet wade. Even though he was under the weather he posed for pictures, answered questions and spent time with the group. We did the tour on the way out of Las Vegas. As we hadn’t really planned for it, we just stopped in to see the place and learned that there was a tour given by Brett’s fiancé (who was very nice, although I can’t remember her name.) My husband loves fish tanks and is a fan of the show so it was interesting to go into the office area and see the place in person. These guys are amazing, they can make an kind of tank you want. I have only seen their show on television unfortunately but they are creative.Serendipity Ice Cream Parlor adjacent to Cesar’s Palace asked them to make a gum ball machine for them. This thing was awesome. We stopped by late on FRI and while in the ‘store” the “general” walked in and graciously offered a personal tour to our family of 4, including our special needs daughter. He could not have been more personable, polite and gracious with his time; walking us thru the entire facility, toured the teams’ offices and even had Wade join us for a few pictures. Excellent! 5 stars all the way! I had as much fun as the kids! Bought the behind the scenes tour and got to meet Brett, his fiancé Trish (she’s so nice/the tour guide) the General, wade & Redneck. They really are awesome, purchased a hat, book and shirts and they signed as well. We watch the show all the time. So we really wanted to go and do the tour And we weren’t disapointed. All the staff could not have been nicer and helpful. We managed to meet and get picture with brett and the general. We also got to meet victor and trish who does the tour.
We had trish who was really nice and funny. I was a bit worried that they weren’t what you seen on tv, we got the back story of the whole ATM history which was really intresting to find out. The future tanks that will be on the show tanks that have been previously made. I think the warehouse looks much bigger on Tv than in real life so don’t be disapointed with that.
If you love the show i would really recommend the tour. Thanks We watch the “Tanked” series on Animal Planet. This tour (our guide was Brett’s Fiancé) was around an hour with a behind the scene glimpse of the process from conception to installation for those awesome tanks. Fun facts on how they started and when they got their show.
It was a wonderful experience!!!! Tanked tour led by Trisha I have been a fan of the show since the start of it many years ago. I was looking forward to the the tour which was great. Trisha showed the group round which was a small group. However they do allow as many on the tour that want to come so I can see that it could get overcrowded. Trisha explained a bit about how the tanks are made and some of the designs – the journey so far and enspiring stories. Very interesting. It’s also nice to see all the fan mail displayed. Tour lasts about an hour and you can get snacks there. Overall it was enjoyable and I was lucky to meet the cast accept for Brett who was away unfortunately. Very nice friendly family business and I’m so pleased they have done so well. Looking forward to more shows. One thing I should highlight and the tanked team should take note. I was asked during the tour if I wanted a taxi to get back after which I said yes. At the end of the tour it wasn’t a taxi that had been called but an independent tour operator who started pressuring to do a tour on the spot-as if I had no plans of my own – it was uncomfortable as I had to say no multiple times. I just wanted to get back to the strip but there was no metre in the car and no transparency about the cost. When dropped off I was charged €30 for About 10 mins drive. I should have called an Uber as the cost would have only been €14. I wish I hadn’t got in the car. The tanked staff shouldn’t arrange this for its visitors and should either call a proper taxi or advise visitors to call an Uber if they need a cab. This put a damper on the experience for me – the ride home was as expensive as the tour almost.

How much did Shaq pay for his fish tank?
Shaquille O’Neal – Even My Fish Are Diesel, Shows Off ‘Super’ Aquarium We know Shaquille O’Neal rolls big, and now his pet fish do too – in a massive $50,000 aquarium he had custom built into a freakin’ big rig truck! Yeah, tropical fish can be badass.
Shaq posted a pic of his giant self yesterday next to his new baby – a 3,000 pound tank complete with the Superman logo (a Shaq fave). It’s framed by the cab of a tractor trailer, which would dwarf any other fish tank owner. The hosts of the Animal Planet show “Tanked” – Wayde King and Brett Raymer – designed and built the saltwater pad which houses dozens of exotic species like Miniature Groupers, Clown Triggers, Mappa Puffers, and even Dragon Eels! Wayde and Brett told us it was one of the most unique projects they’ve ever worked on – especially because hey had to load in the Dragon Eels,
which they called “a bit aggressive.” Feeding time is gonna be interesting. : Shaquille O’Neal – Even My Fish Are Diesel, Shows Off ‘Super’ Aquarium
Did Wade get divorced from Tanked?
‘Tanked’ Stars To Divorce Days After Alleged Assault Tanked star Heather King filed for divorce from Wayde King on Friday, according to the legal paperwork obtained by TMZ. The news of the pair’s pending split comes just days after King was allegedly arrested for assaulting her husband.
- Ing and Wayde are known for co-staring on the Animal Planet reality series, which takes viewers inside a booming fish tank business.
- The impressive and expensive tanks showcase underwater creativity, fit for any environment.
- While the details on King’s alleged assault are unconfirmed, reports claim the Animal Planet star was arrested after cops were called to the couple’s home.
King was allegedly booked for misdemeanor domestic assault, according to TMZ. She was not kept in jail, and was able to leave later in the day. Reports say King kicked and slapped Wayde in the middle of an argument, People reported. The couple have been married for 21 years.
- In the divorce, King is asking for primary custody of the pair’s children, according to TMZ.
- She’s also asking for Wayde to provide healthcare for their children, as well as child support equal to 25 percent of his annual income, and for her own spousal support.
- Ing also acknowledged she’d like to keep her married last name in the paperwork, TMZ explained.
King, Wayde and Animal Planet have not commented on the divorce or alleged assault. Not only were King and Wayde married, but King was actively involved in the business, which is run by her brother, father and soon-to-be ex-husband, Acrylic Tank Manufacturing, that appears on Animal Planet.
- Ing’s bio on the show’s website reads as follows.
- It would be great if all Heather King had to handle at ATM was the books.
- But working alongside her father, brother and husband in one office every day is a little more than an average day job; it’s clearly a labor of love,” the Animal Planet bio reads.
“Heather is the absolute love of Wayde’s life and handles all the accounting at ATM. Seeing Wayde in his glory doing what he is most passionate about makes the struggles of mixing business with pleasure well worth it. Heather knew a lot about accounting when she started, having run her father’s machinery business for a few years, but she was in the deep end when it came to fish.” The bio continues, stating Heather loves to dance, and also wants to see her two daughters take over the company someday.

How scripted is Tanked?
Aquarium builders from ‘Tanked’ come to Home & Garden Show It’s all real, says Brett Raymer about his television show “Tanked” on Animal Planet. Raymer and his brother-in-law Wayde King run Acrylic Tank Manufacturing, a Las Vegas-based aquarium builder that is known for its over-the-top tanks. They do, indeed, build the tanks you see on the show and many, many others that you don’t see, and they are real people. “It’s 100 percent of how we are. Nothing is scripted,” he says. “Everything that comes out of our mouths comes from Wayde and me.” That includes the numerous practical jokes they play on one another and fellow family members, including Raymer’s father and his sister, who is also King’s wife. Everybody knows about the joke, except the person being played, Raymer says. “Those are real reactions.” Raymer and King will be coming to Austin on Aug.24-25 for the Austin Home & Garden show, and they will be bringing a tank that was featured on the new season. Raymer and King became TV stars on a classic King/Raymer dare. “People used to come into the office and say, ‘You guys are great; you should be on TV.'” They heard it enough times that Raymer says he eventually told King, “Dude, we can do this.” So, King dared him to get them on TV. Raymer says he took on the challenge and began shopping the idea around to production companies until he found one that would honor that this is a real company, with real people, who are also family. “We both want what’s best for the company,” he says. “We’re really happy we do what we do.” Most of the tanks you see on the show, which airs 9 p.m. Fridays, cost $20,000 and up, with the most expensive one being a $350,000 tank for an Alabama casino. Raymer says the show’s producers don’t like it when he shares prices because they don’t want it to feel like the tanks are unattainable. For the home enthusiast, Raymer encourages aquarium owners to make sure they have a good filtration system. “Don’t go half-(expletive) on the equipment,” he says. He also is a firm believer in having a quarantine tank to keep new fish for 30 days before they go into a regular tank. A lot of what you don’t see on the show is the more “boring” stuff, and that includes the science behind a fish tank — getting the pH balance of the water right and adding beneficial bacteria. “People don’t have patience,” Raymer says. “They see what we do and think they can duplicate it.” A lot of the reasons the tanks seen in the show come together so quickly is the fish are prequarantined and the water is fish-ready. The No.1 thing aquarium owners do to hurt the tank is to overfeed the fish, he says. It causes the ammonia in the water to spike and fish to die. At the Austin Home & Garden Show, Raymer will be bringing a bakery display case-turned fish tank that was used as a temporary installation in this season’s show. He and King also will take photos with fans and sign autographs. Raymer says he still doesn’t think of himself as a celebrity. “We are just two regular guys who happen to have a show,” he says. Did Animal Planet cancel Tanked?
Animal Planet has ended the 15-year run of Tanked, but claims the ending came naturally and is not related to a recent domestic disturbance involving a host. “After 15 fantastic seasons, the series came to a natural end late last year,” confirmed Paul Schur, the VP communications/media relations at Animal Planet.
- The team from Las Vegas’s Acrylic Tank Manufacturing was the focus of the show, which spotlighted exotic, unusual, colorful and dangerous fish in captivity via elaborate aquariums.
- Wayde King and Brett Raymer were the co-hosts, tasked with building the enormous tanks and aquariums for top celebrities, luxury hotels and casinos, and other outlets.
ATM builds more than 200 projects each year, according to its website, with tanks ranging from 50 to one million gallons in size. King and wife Heather were involved in a domestic violence dispute earlier this month, with Heather arrested. She has since filed for divorce.
Who is the number 1 aquarium builder in the world?
Acrylic Tank Manufacturing (ATM) Acrylic artisans Stars of Animal Planet’s reality TV smash hit, Tanked, Acrylic Tank Manufacturing (ATM) is one of the world’s finest creators of bespoke aquariums and acrylic exhibits. Las Vegas, Nevada, may be famous the world over for its neon-lit strip and its instantly recognizable casinos, but if you stop to look a little closer it is also home to a number of other wonders, including some of the world’s leading companies in their respective fields.
- One such example is Acrylic Tank Manufacturing (ATM).
- We are a family-run business, founded in 1997, which is recognized as being the world leader in exhibit design and development, and one of the most successful builders of aquariums on the planet,” begins Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer, Wayde King.
“We specialize in the design and construction of commercial exhibits, viewing panels and water features, taking on more than 200 projects every year, with tanks ranging from 50 gallons to one million gallons in size.” With a client base that extends from residential homes and restaurants, to casinos, zoos and aquariums, each of ATM’s creations is unique and custom built to meet its customers wishes.
Such is the company’s reputation for creating what it describes at ‘living art’ that it has been the subject of the reality television series Tanked, broadcast on Animal Planet since 2011. “Tanked is one of Animal Planet’s top rated shows, drawing almost 1.2 million viewers per week, and airs in more than 100 countries in Asia, Europe, and Latin and South America,” Wayde continues.
“The success of the show has definitely provided us with worldwide recognition. We have hundreds of fans across our social media platforms and it has opened the doors for us to build tanks for celebrities, musicians and athletes, providing us with an amazing and exciting adventure to embark upon.” ATM is housed in a 37,000-square foot, state-of-the-art facility, which as well as housing its manufacturing capabilities also plays host to its offices and showroom, where customers are welcome to view many of its most recent aquatic creations.
ATM’s aquarium systems are engineered to provide many years of dependability and enjoyment,” Wayde explains. “On average, the process of consultation, design, manufacturing and installation of a customer’s aquarium takes six weeks. Our proprietary process gives us the ability to bend acrylic, while the endless creativity of our team allows us to be faithful to our slogan, which is ‘if you can dream it, we can build it.'” Custom-made tanks Aquariums under 300 gallons in capacity carry a lifetime warranty against manufacturer defects, while those that are 300 gallons and above are covered by a five-year warranty.
All the acrylic used by ATM is guaranteed for 20 years against discoloration and flatsided aquariums are guaranteed to provide completely undistorted viewing. All of the manufactured products and materials used by the company are made in the United States, and all of its live stock are drug-free.
The majority of custom fish tanks are created to hold thousands of gallons of water and these structures need to be cut with precision, molded to perfection and assembled with the best quality materials available. All of the aforementioned requirements are all in a day’s work for ATM. The company knows that the best part of owning a custom tank, created to one’s specifications, is that whatever the intended use it can be made precisely for one’s space and personal style.
Customer support The first stage in the construction of an ATM custom aquarium involves the customer communicating with its artists, sharing their ideas, which are it turn passed to the company’s manufacturing professionals. All conceptual designs are then run through 3D illustrations and CAD systems, before a final design is sent for construction.
Upon completion, ATM ensures that the aquarium is meticulously installed to provide the customer with a worry-free start-up. It follows this up with expert advice regarding the daily, weekly and monthly maintenance checks the customer should carry out. The company stresses that when a logical and regular pattern is followed, properly set up aquariums are remarkably reasonable and predictable in their maintenance demands, and it also offers a range of products to assist with this.
Artisan creations In addition to providing a majestic aquatic addition to people’s homes, ATM also specializes in creating custom exhibits for zoos, aquariums and similar establishments. These exhibits are designed to create a seamless experience between guests and animals, and can range from recreations of coral reefs to mango swamps.
- Such exhibits can be constructed out of various materials with acrylic and fiberglass reinforced often molded in various shapes and sizes, with features such as waterfalls, touch tanks and tidal surge tanks created by using gunite or shotcrete.
- These mediums can be carved to depict natural stone work from around the world, and ATM’s exhibit tradesmen and artisans have been known to have created some of the most realistic trees, roots and veins ever seen.
Furthermore, should the exhibits needs be for local or indigenous nature, the company can offer onsite poly tech molding of natural rocks or plant life to make it as realistic as possible. Close partnerships When working on such significant projects as those ATM undertakes, it is vital that the company can be confident in the quality of every aspect of the work that is performed.
To this end, ATM works with suppliers and partners who uphold its own values and standards, and it has established relationships with partnered service affiliates that it can trust will deliver exactly the service required, in a timely and reliable manner. One such member of the affiliate program is Aquarium Design Network New York, and Wayde highlights the benefits of working with trusted partners such as this –they are especially important given ATM’s reputation and also its television presence: “ATM enjoys working with companies and people that are part of our affiliate program because they are familiar with our filtration and know the quality and level of professionalism that ATM stands behind.
When we work with someone that we have been working with for years it also saves time, which is very important, especially during filming.” At the time of writing, ATM continues to attract huge amounts of interest and projects, a number of which continue to feature on Tanked, which is now into its twelfth season.
What are the Tanked Guys doing now?
With co-star and brother-in-law Wayde King, Raymer has created custom tanks with elaborate themes and exotic fish for A-listers, including DeMarcus Cousins and Tracy Morgan. The series ended in December 2018, but the duo will continue making waves with a new YouTube series, ‘Lifestyles of the Fish and Famous.’
How long do Tanked fish live?
How Long Do Fish Live as Pets? Reviewed by on June 28, 2021 Whether you’re considering getting a pet fish or you already have one, understanding the of pet fish will help you give your companions the best. With proper care, your fish can live for a long time. To keep your fish healthy and happy throughout their life, you need to understand the needs of fish in general.
- There are thousands of fish breeds, and each one requires different care and feeding.
- It’s important to remember that your fish’s health is a direct reflection of their environment.
- Eeping their tank clean will improve their well-being and their life.
- Fish breeds and lifespan.
- Fish have a bad reputation for short lives, but with proper care they can live for at least three to five years.
Some breeds live a decade or longer. For example, the common goldfish, one of the most popular pet fish breeds, grows to be up to eight inches long and can live for twenty years. Other popular pet fish breeds include:
Common plecoSaifin plec/gibbyBristlenoseClown loachCorydorasDiscusOscarFancy goldfishKissing gouramiAngelfishBala sharkSilver sharkNeon tetraTiger barbZebra/Leopard danioBoesemani rainbowfishGuppyMollyPlatyRam cichlidSailfin molly
The role of tank quality. Keep in mind that the size of your fish tank should serve your fish through their lifelong growth and not just their size when you first get them. Think about where you can put a tank in your home that’s away from windows and air conditioners.
- This will help to regulate the water temperature and reduce algae growth in the water.
- Talk to your local pet store or office about the requirements for your specific fish breed.
- Maintaining a certain pH level is important for many fish breeds.
- Don’t use tap water unless you allow it to sit for a few days.
This is because there are additives like chlorine and other compounds. Alternately, use a de-chlorinator before moving the water to your fish tank. Keep your fish’s water clean but not sterile. Good bacteria grow in the water and help maintain your fish’s health.
- Change the water 10%-15% at a time to allow for the introduction of fresh water without shocking your pet’s system with a dramatic change.
- Role of nutrition.
- Flake and pellet food are most commonly used for pet fish.
- You can sprinkle food in the morning and evening, but be careful not to overfeed.
- Obesity in fish is life-threatening and can shorten their lifespan.
If you want to supplement their diet, consider:
Freeze-dried Tubifex wormsMosquito larvaBloodwormsDaphniaBrineshrimpVegetables like boiled peas or lettuce
Maintain a low-stress environment. Stress affects all of us, and fish are not immune. Since fish like to hide, make sure there are real or plastic plants your fish can swim between. If you have other pets, like or, keep them away from the tank so your fish doesn’t feel threatened.
Consider which breeds share a tank. Different breeds of fish aren’t always compatible. Talk to your vet or pet store before introducing new fish to a tank. In fact, it’s a good idea to keep new fish separated for a few days to a week. This ensures they are healthy, so they don’t introduce an illness to your other fish.

‘Tanked’ star opens eatery, brings slice of NY Italian to valley Updated April 6, 2022 – 12:46 pm Brett Raymer has gone from filters to pizza dough, from fins to Godfather heroes, from extravagant aquaria to the search for the perfect pomodoro to caress the bucatini.
Raymer, a former star of “Tanked” on Animal Planet, just opened Stallone’s Italian Eatery at 467 E. Silverado Ranch Blvd. For 15 seasons, ending in late 2018, “Tanked” followed Raymer, family members and employees of his Las Vegas-based Acrylic Tank Manufacturing as they built lavish fish tanks for celebrities and businesses.
At Stallone’s, Raymer brought aboard Louie Zweifach as his business partner and executive chef. Both men grew up in Brooklyn — Raymer in Sheepshead Bay and Manhattan Beach, Zweifach in Canarsie — and the restaurant cements a connection they didn’t realize they had when they met in 2020.
- We got to talking.
- I told him some names of people I grew up with,” Raymer said.
- It turned out there was one family “where I grew up with the younger brother, Louie grew up with the other brother.
- We ran parallel in Brooklyn but didn’t know each other.
- We became good friends.” Eventually, Raymer proposed they open a restaurant together, a slice of the old neighborhood come to south Vegas.
And really, what else could Stallone’s have been? “It was always going to be an Italian restaurant,” Raymer said, his voice still seasoned with his native borough. “It’s like a New York pizzeria and pasta place. I call it New York Italian.” The crust must pass the pizza test A real Stallone gave the restaurant its name (in part).
- Anthony Monte, the chef de cuisine, has an uncle named Stallone.
- But Stallone’s also draws on the power of familiarity.
- Everyone recognizes that name, everyone knows it, so why not use it?” Raymer asked.
- Stallone’s occupies a 1,400-square-foot storefront, with about 25 seats, sports memorabilia garnishing the walls, food served in round foil tins with crimped edges and pizza sold by the slice or pie.
Pizza dough is made using an older-model Hobart mixer; the pies issue from a Bakers Pride gas-deck oven that’s a decade old (but with new pizza stones). “Chef Louie has been making pizza for 30 years. These are what he prefers,” Raymer said of the equipment.
- The New York-inspired pizza crust “is not too thin, not overly thick, and it has to pass the pizza test.” Which means a slice must be foldable, the way New Yorkers eat it, but “the front doesn’t flop.
- That’s the pizza test.” Stallone’s offers 12- or 16-inch pies (plus calzones and stromboli).
- There’s a classic Margherita, yes, but also twists on the standards.
Like a pizza topped with eggplant Parmesan. Or a pie sauced with pomodoro alla vodka. Or the 9th Island fashioned from pineapple, a flurry of crisp prosciutto, and kicks of sriracha and pickled red onion. “That’s our version of a Hawaiian pizza,” Raymer said.
- They say Vegas is the ninth island.
- We have a lot of Hawaiians here.” Pasta sauce, inside and out Pasta and house specialties also anchor Stallone’s menu.
- Baked penne? Of course, with three cheeses and pomodoro (which the restaurant uses instead of thinner marinara).
- Rigatoni? It’s here, with a choice of four sauces and chicken or shrimp as add-ons.
Lasagna? Pork, veal and beef come together in this signature Stallone dish. And spaghetti and meatballs? Not quite. Bucatini, a hollow strand pasta from the Lazio region of Italy, replaces the usual spaghetti. “A lot of people don’t use bucatini,” Raymer said.
The hole in the pasta helps capture the sauce inside the pasta instead of falling off it.” The meatballs (Chef Louie’s meatballs, to be exact) are worth a longer mention. Like the lasagna, they unite pork, veal and beef. They’re made fresh daily not just for pasta, but also as a starter, as a pizza topping and for the meatball submarine sandwich (among other varied uses).
In New York, they’re heroes, not subs At Stallone’s, as they are in New York, submarine sandwiches are known as heroes. “Our slogan is ‘Why be a sub when you can be a hero?’ ” Raymer said. Before opening the restaurant, the business partners shipped samples of their favorite hero rolls from New York and Florida, then asked several local bakers to replicate the rolls.
The chosen baker, Raymer said, agreed to prepare the 10-inch Italian-style rolls only for Stallone’s. The Godfather, the most popular hero, stacks a chicken cutlet, prosciutto, fresh mozzarella and roasted red peppers. Ham and fried eggplant star in the Raiders Special. A sausage and pepper hero, a mainstay of New York Italian cooking, is smothered in sauce and cheese.
The Big Guido does pork four ways: ham, pepperoni, prosciutto and Genoa salami. A lasagna sandwich technically isn’t a hero (it’s served on garlic Texas toast), but that’s beside the point when a slice of lasagna draped in pomodoro and cheese appears between thick slices of bread.
- It’s a little bit of a carb overload,” Raymer said.
- As in New York, Stallone’s cold heroes are wrapped in wax paper, then white deli paper, its hot heroes in foil, then paper.
- These details are for authenticity,” Raymer said of the wraps.
- With cheesy hot heroes, the foil is crucial.
- Without it, “instead of getting a Parmesan sandwich, you’re getting mostly sauce because your cheese has stuck to the wrapper.” Although Stallone’s is Raymer’s first restaurant, it’s not his first culinary venture.
He was once a partner in four local Donut Mania shops, which closed in 2019 after a rival filed a lawsuit alleging improper use of trade secrets and intellectual property. Raymer said he could not comment on the litigation. His hope for Stallone’s, he said, was “to be that mom and pop place everybody comes to.” Where life after fish tanks (and doughnuts) is played out in pizza and pasta, heroes and meatballs.
