When was Yuengling available in Indiana?

Yuengling beer launches soon in Indiana Indiana is about to welcome the country’s oldest craft brewery. Starting next month Yuengling beer will be available in Indiana, making it the 20th state to sell the storied brew. The 188-year history of Pottsville, Pa.-based Yuengling and the brand’s popularity combined with the size of the statewide launch has people very excited. “This is the largest beer launch the state has had since 1991,” says Pat Flynn, vice president at Indiana Beverage. “It’s a big deal.” South Bend-based Indiana Beverage is one of three companies distributing Yuengling in the state. The other distributors are Monarch Beverage and Five Star Distributing. Indiana Beverage has been in discussions with Yuengling for about 10 years, Flynn says. Because the company has only two breweries in the country, in Pottsville and Tampa, Fla., it has to be careful about expansion. “You can’t supply everybody,” Flynn says, “but we are lucky to get it.” Indiana is starting out with three Yuengling beers: the Traditional Lager, the Light Lager and the Black & Tan. The beers will be available in bars and restaurants starting March 6. For Indiana Beverage’s distribution area, Flynn says, that’s about 800 bars and restaurants getting Yuengling. Then, on April 3 Yuengling will become available in stores. Spacing the launch dates between bars and stores is the “right way to launch” the beer, Flynn says. Having it only in bars and restaurants first allows people to taste it served with the proper glassware and at the optimum temperature. Tasting it the right way, he says, makes people more likely to buy the packaged beer when it comes to stores. It wasn’t a hard sell when Indiana Beverage started contacting bars and restaurants about carrying Yuengling. “The beer sells itself,” Flynn says. “It’s not a flash-in-the-pan brand. This brand resonates with people.” Flynn says Indiana Beverage was able to develop a relationship with Yuengling because the two have similar cultures and both are in the fifth generation of family ownership. “The beer business is built on relationships,” he says. Indiana Beverage started as a grocery store in the 1870s and got into the beer business in 1939. Over the years it has grown to have a very broad beer portfolio, Flynn says, and Yuengling is now another big name the company has landed. “We are very blessed and humbled by what’s happened,” Flynn says of how Indiana Beverage has continued to grow, now landing Yuengling. “We are very excited.” Lincoln Wright’s column runs on Wednesdays and Sundays. So when he found out I was from Illinois he asked me, “so you’ve been to Indiana, right?” Of course I’ve been to Indiana. I’ve seen football games there and I have family there. His response was, “I never really thought Indiana existed, that it was all a myth or something.” Yuengling is to me as Indiana was to him.

Long story short, a friend of mine used to live in Nashville, Tennessee where Yuengling is aplenty. A friend of his who still lives there got him a case for Christmas and I in turn traded off a six-pack of Two Brothers Cane and Ebel in exchange for a sixer of lagery goodness.

2. Was it worth it? Does Yuengling Traditional Lager live up to the hype and mythical expectations? Yesand for the most part.
3. The first thing I found out about Yuengling is that I have actually had it before, albeit at least five years ago, and that I liked it much better before my palate had been crushed by triple digit IBU beers.

Secondly, it is better straight out of the bottle than poured in to any number of glasses I selected as a beer sipping vessel. So, out of the bottle you get whiffs of sweet caramel and apple butter on toast. Take a sip and you get a slightly syrupy and sweet beer with little carbonation.

Flavors of creamy caramel, biscuits and lemon zest dance on the palate before leaving you with a crisp, dry finish. For me, this beer falls in to the same category as a Bell’s Oberon or New Glarus’ Spotted Cow, It’s more about the experience of sipping something you can’t normally get your hands on or the emotions the beer brings about than the taste of the beer itself.

Case in point, Oberon — to me — signals the beginning of summer. “Now you can look forward to women in sundresses, grilling on the back porch, drinking away an afternoon and baseball. Have it with an orange. Or don’t. It doesn’t really matter because it’s summer now.

1. Want to buy it in a mini-keg? Do it.
2. You have nothing else to do –- because it’s summer.” Is Oberon the greatest wheat beer ever brewed? Not quite, but it does make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside when it’s first tapped and shows up on store shelves.
3. And New Glarus’ Spotted Cow? Well, the draw to that beer is that you actually have to work for it.

In order to get Spotted Cow, because it is not distributed outside of Wisconsin, I have to make an effort to get in my car and drive an hour north to pick some up. It’s all about how bad you want it. So what made the Yuengling Traditional Lager taste so good? I don’t know when I will ever have this beer again, which made each drop taste that much better.

Battle to allow cold beer sales spans a decade – Grocery stores, convenience stores and pharmacies have been trying to convince lawmakers to expand cold beer sales for the past 10 years. The ban started out as a so-called blue law to limit consumption.

Over time, the focus has shifted and package liquor stores have argued to remain the state’s exclusive outlets for cold beer, in part because they say it keeps them in business. Another bill filed this year would require grocery and drug store clerks to complete additional training to sell alcohol and regulate where within such stores alcohol can be displayed.

The idea is to limit access to minors. A 2017 IndyStar analysis of alcohol sales to minors, however, found the problem is much greater at liquor stores than at grocery or drug stores. Scott Imus, director of the Indiana Petroleum Marketers and Convenience Store Association, said that industry is watching to see what happens now that Hupfer and Feltman are in the business.
