How do I find a good ping pong table?
How to spot a good quality table tennis table – The easiest way to identify whether a table tennis table is any good is the thickness of the table tennis top. The thickness will range from 12mm to 25mm. Thicker = better quality. Thinner = worse quality.
You should avoid buying tables with a really thin table tennis top (e.g.12mm). The ball just doesn’t bounce very well and the tables are flimsy and easy to damage. Tables with a medium thickness (16mm-19mm) are actually OK. For many years I had a 19mm Butterfly Easifold table tennis table in my garage, which was absolutely fine for my purposes of a training with a robot.
You will get a consistent bounce and if you look after the table, it should last for many years. Tables with thick table tennis top (22mm-25mm) are definitely the best. But they are also the most expensive. I now have a JOOLA World Cup (22mm) table in my home and it is wonderful to play on.
Can you use any table for beer pong?
The Table – The game originated on an actual ping pong table, but can be played on any flat surface with enough surface space to hold the two cup formations a minimum of 6′ apart. In official beer pong games a 2’x 8′ table is used, such as the ones sold on our site.
Is beer pong still popular?

Is beer pong hygienic?
Game play – Possible beer pong re-racks Traditionally, the game of beer pong has been played by countless variations of rule sets. In recent years, organizations such as The World Series of Beer Pong have put forth “official” rules. Typically, players abide by a uniform set of “house rules” which are often consistent within one university or region of the country (e.g.
- West Coast rules”) or may vary on a “house-by-house” basis.
- Number of cups, bouncing, re-racking, amount of alcohol, distance shots must be taken from, etc.
- May all vary.
- All house rules should be posted or verbally stated and understood by both teams before the game starts.
- The order of play varies – both players on one team can shoot, followed by both players on the other team, or players on opposite teams can alternate back and forth.
A cup that is made must immediately have its contents drunk and be removed from play. Some rule sets allow for ” re-racking ” (also known as ” reforming “, ” rearranging “, ” consolidation “, and other names), which is a rearrangement of a team’s remaining cups after some have been removed.
- The formations, number of cups, when to rearrange and so on, depend on the rule set.
- For example, a team with three remaining cups may ask the other team to “re-rack” the cups into a single triangle formation.
- Common house rules allow players to ‘finger’ or blow the ball out of the cup if the ball spins around the inner rim.
Another common house rule states that if a team makes both shots during their turn, a ‘rollback’ occurs allowing each player on that team to shoot again. In the World Series of Beer Pong rules, only a single-ball ‘rollback’ occurs resulting in a three cup maximum that can be made per turn.
What is the secret to beer pong?
Beer pong tips and tricks Rather than aim for the edges of the initial pyramid, go for a cluster of cups in the middle so there’s more scope for it to land in one. Practice both over and underhand throwing to see which one you’re better at. Keep your elbows behind the table when you throw the ball.
Why is it called beer pong?
Beer Pong and Beirut? – Whether you’re a current frat bro, aspiring frat bro, recovering frat bro, romantically involved with a frat bro, the parent of a frat bro, or friends with or enemies of or otherwise acquainted with a frat bro, you probably have some familiarity with a few beer-soaked drinking games.
Chances are, one of those drinking games includes cups of beer, ping-pong balls, and drunk people trying to get said ping-pong balls into said cups of beer. But is that game beer pong, or Beirut ? Were the frat stars who poured beer on themselves and pounded their chests and declared themselves the champions of it actually using the correct term? Like many things that involve heavy amounts of alcohol, the answer is fuzzy.
The first games of beer pong were played up at Dartmouth in the early 1950s, when people were playing ping-pong and left their cups of beer on the table; someone decided it would be a good idea to aim the ball at the cups, and a drinking game was born.
The game evolved into a competition in which opponents use ping-pong paddles with the handles snapped off — no handles equals more accuracy — and aim at cups arranged in varying formations, such as Shrub, Tree, Ship, or Line. Hit the side of a cup with the ball, and your opponent drinks half the cup; sink the ball successfully, and your opponent drinks the whole thing.
Beirut — a game with a similar outcome (drunkenness) but different rules — came about in the 1980s, at either Bucknell or Lehigh. (There are disputes as to where it was played first.) In Beirut, 10 cups are arranged in a pyramid shape on both sides of a table; the competitors then stand at either side and take turns throwing the ping-pong ball across the table, rather than paddling it.
If a ball is sunk into a cup, one of the opponents has to chug it. But what’s the deal with the name? The game was popularized during a time when Beirut, Lebanon was in the news: in 1983, suicide bombers killed 241 U.S. Marines stationed in barracks at the Beirut airport. Supposedly, people at Lehigh felt that the U.S.
should’ve bombed Beirut in retribution for the attacks, and thought the ping-pong balls dropping to the other side of the table resembled bombs being dropped on the Lebanese capital. They started calling the game “Beirut,” and it caught on. But as the game started to spread around the United States, to areas unfamiliar with the original Dartmouth version, people started to drop the name “Beirut” — and called it “beer pong” instead.
(You gotta say, the name intuitively makes sense, even without the use of paddles.) So now wait for it both are called beer pong, Some may still use the name Beirut — and if they do, you know which game it is — but if you hear the term “beer pong,” it could mean one of two things. A messy history, an unsatisfying conclusion: sounds about right for a drinking game.
Cheers! • What’s the Difference Between Beer Pong and Beirut?
What is the secret of beer pong?
5 Tips to Always WIN at Beer Pong (Everytime) If I’m being honest I’ve never actually enjoyed the game very much – for a few simple reasons: ● I don’t go to University in America. ● I have never been to University in America. ● I don’t own a New York Yankees cap like Fred Durst.
● My mum always told me not to play with my food. ● I can’t drink beer anymore. So the above list is the main reasons I lost. It has nothing to do with my piss-poor hand/eye coordination and severe shakes after one too many months on the sauce. Annoyed I decided to examine how I can win every time and not look like an idiot again.
I present this knowledge now to you. Aiming & Choosing Cups There are of course lots of ‘experts’ on Beer Pong, and one of them on the internet suggests that you should choose the cups you aim for very carefully. By choosing the right ones you can ensure that the likelihood of success is much greater.
In the simplest terms, aim for the cups at the front and work your way back. If the ball bounces off the front ones it’s momentum is more likely to get it into the cups further back, instead of bouncing forward. Simple science innit. Type of Throw There are three main schools of thought on the kind of throw that is the best.
This is because there are 3 main types of throw. There’s the Arc (a long, high, slow descent into a cup), the Fastball (a speedy, low and aggressive shove) and the Bounce (you bounce the ball off the table once, obviously). My personal favourite is the Bounce, primarily because as the ball hits the table the first time, the table absorbs a lot of the energy – meaning the ball is a lot slower and less likely to ricochet off the cups and onto the floor.
Holding the Ball There are a million ways to throw a ball. You can do it underhand like Frank Reynolds, overhand like Freddy Flintoff or you can flick it out of your palm like some jock in Alpha Sigma Phi down the road. It seems like the most common (and fool proof) method however is to place the ball between your thumb, forefinger and middle finger.
Just make a little trof with your two bigger fingers for the ball to rest in and use your thumb to project the ball across the table. Practice too – obviously. Get in your Opponents Head This advice works with any game really. Psychology is a great tool for winning and if you can get into your opponent’s head – you’ve done half the work.
- There are, of course, multiple ways to do this – it all depends of your opponent – so it’s a good idea to have a chat with them first (or during) to get an idea of what they’re like.
- If you find a useful button which you can press – keep pressing until the snap.
- Don’t antagonise someone bigger than you – unless you’re Bruce Lee.
Never stop drinking This is also just as important as all the other tips – never stop drinking while playing Beer Pong – otherwise you’re just going to tense up and fuck it all up. Having a drink will keep you loose, keep your hands supple and smooth and ensure that you have the arrogance and confidence to BELIEVE that you can win.
- The only problem is when you go too far – it’s a tightrope between that perfect drunk Beer Pong zone and being so drunk that you can’t see the cups at the end of the table.

How high of a ceiling do you need for a ping pong table?
Recommended Ceiling Height – One factor that many people don’t think about when buying a Table Tennis table is the ceiling height. If you have a low ceiling, this can make it very difficult to play lob shots or any returns away from the table. We recommend a ceiling height of at least 9 feet (2.75 metres),
- The general rule of thumb is that the higher the ceiling, the better.
- One of the most fun parts of Table Tennis is playing smashes and lobs so it’s best to play in a room where these shots are possible.
- If you’re trying to work out whether your ceiling is high enough, it’s important to remember that the table itself is already 2.5 feet high.
Find a table that’s a similar height and try and play bootleg Ping Pong to see if you’re ceiling is high enough. Watch out for any hanging lights / ornaments that can get in the way above the table as well.
Why is Chinese ping pong so good?
Solid System – China has a solid system in place which is not developed overnight. It took years of hard work and persistence to develop this solid base for players. China has huge sports schools which also include the world’s best China Table Tennis college, which is only dedicated to Table Tennis.
China has a massive infrastructure backed by coaches. The country’s federation estimates that there are around 80 million people who play the game in China. Right from the junior age, first, there is the identification of potential talent which is determined by certain games and their level of physical coordination is put to the test.
Then at a young age, they are taught a very different ball game which is focused more on building basics and techniques. India’s Table Tennis star Sathiyan Gnanasekaran decoded China’s dominance in Table Tennis in an interview with the First Post. Gnanasekaran says that the approach to grooming these players is different.
- He points out that at the younger level, Chinese paddlers are not focused on winning titles.
- They are taught more about perfecting their basics and techniques.
- He says, “It’s not just about the infrastructure.
- They have a solid coaching system.
- From beginner to intermediate, they focus on the technique and the basics so much! They have a system which they want all players to follow like a book since childhood.
Coaches all over China follow this roadmap. Then they step it up.” “I have beaten a lot of Chinese players in the junior ranks. In that age category, a lot of them are beatable. They don’t know the exact tactics. When I was playing as a kid, I was always taught how to win.
- Indians want to win every match from a young age.
- But that’s not the way that Chinese players are taught.
- They take a longer route.
- If a child is not winning in India, he probably won’t continue in the sport.
- But that’s not the case in China,” he says.
- They don’t want their players to go into competition mode internationally at a very young age.
At the age of 16, when these players are taught the nuances of the game and are explained tactics, they become beasts! They are almost unbeatable! The world fears them,” says Sathiyan. As a young player in China grows, they mature and master their skills.
At an intermediate level, they work regressively on basics and at an advanced stage, they work on tactics and game reading, footwork etc. There are little-little details that are corrected, observed and worked on. The skills of serving and receiving are one such nuance of the game where a player takes the most points.
The Chinese rush their opponents. “Striking the ball even a split-second earlier gives the opponent lesser time,” Gnanasekaran says.
Is ping pong the hardest sport?
The Science of Table Tennis – Introduction Original by Santiago Sevilla – 2012 Table tennis is the 2nd most complete sport in the world, it defies the physics gravity laws, involves the use of brain and more than 80% of the muscles. Table tennis is a complete and popular sport in the entire world, everybody knows about it and how to play it in a basic way but in reality almost anybody knows about its complexity and benefits in mental and physical attributions.
When most of people play in their houses they think that this sport is very simple, not so fast to play and that they only need to play with the hand, but this is not correct, table tennis uses almost all of the muscles, also a complete use of the brain in order to form strategies in each point and finally the reasons why this sport is so amazing when you look it at a high level, these are the sciences of table tennis.
Table tennis is an awesome sport in which physics play an important role, and it has developed so much that scientists are wondering how this sport defies the gravity laws. Table tennis games are very complex because of the spin, rotation, acceleration, gravity play and the Magnus effect, that make some phenomenon’s in a match, for example: a ball crossing down the net and reaching to the next part of the table; or a ball with almost no elevation being smashed when the logic and gravity laws say: the minimum of elevation of the ball, the most of spin and rotation given, so it could cross to the other side of the table.
- All these features play an important role during a point, that’s why is so amazing when you watch it in a professional level, with a very few seconds combine all of this scientific factors.
- Table tennis isn’t a sport in which the one who smashes the ball faster wins the point; it principally needs the use of many brain structures.
One basic example is when you normally play with the right hand and you start training with the left hand the result is that the other hemisphere start working and you become more skillful. The main thing in table tennis are strategies and these strategies should be done before playing each point or even the match.
- Another strategy is watching how your opponent plays so you could make the correct decision in order to win the match.
- Finally the concentration is fundamental in order to become a good table tennis player, even in professional players is very important to be a moment alone and imagine how your match is going to be.
Mind training in which you apply the strategy to your opponent and see if it’s correct or not; all of this might be done before the match or tournament in order to be prepared. That’s why this sport is called an intelligent sport. Many scientific studies said that table tennis is the most difficult sport to practice because of its complexity in the use of muscles, more than the 80% from feet to neck.
What to look for when buying a used ping pong table?
Pay attention to the thickness of the frame underneath the table top. Depending on the thickness of the frame the table may be more or less durable. A good solid frame under the playing surface is key to a long-lasting unit.
How much should I pay for a ping pong table?
When you want to buy something, one factor is crucial – the price. This is no different with ping pong tables. As so often, you could simply answer the question “How much does a ping pong table cost” with – “It depends”. But that doesn’t get you anywhere.
This post is meant to give you an accurate idea of what price you can expect to pay for your new table. So How much does a table tennis table cost? The average price is $250-500 for indoor, $400-700 for outdoor, and $50-150 for mini tables. Conversion tops, which pretty much are just tables without legs, cost around 150-300$.
If you want a high-end product, you can spend everything from $1000€ up to $4000€ for a table tennis table. This short overview of course does not explain why there are such price differences between the individual models and which price segment is right for you.
You will find the answers to these questions in the course of this post. First of all, it is necessary to clarify why the different variants cost different amounts. Here I refer to the respective average prices since there is no real limit upwards. So in general, outdoor tables are more expensive because the surface is not only made of wood, as is the case with indoor boards.
Depending on the manufacturer, the playing surface is coated with melamine resin or an aluminum composite, or any kind of mixture. This additional layer makes them waterproof and weatherproof so that they can be used outdoors. Indoor tables, on the other hand, are mainly made of wood and are therefore cheaper to produce and, of course, cheaper.
- At this point, however, you should carefully consider whether you should take advantage of the cheaper price.
- Because an indoor plate should only be bought if there is no intention to play outdoors whatsoever.
- You should also keep in mind that no upgrade makes an indoor table suitable for outdoor use ! With outdoor tables, you simply pay for the additional freedom and the more robust construction, and of course, you could always put them inside, too.
The more you spend, the higher quality materials are used for a table. For example, the surface of cheaper indoor tables is made of plywood, while that of more expensive models is made of medium-density fiberboard. Similar things are seen with outdoor tables.
For instance, the high-priced tables are covered with galvanized steel, while the cheaper ones are more likely to be covered with melamine resin. Of course, this doesn’t just apply to the playing surface. The wheels and frame are also made of higher quality materials on more expensive tables. But does that really make such a difference when playing? Do you need galvanized steel or fiberboards to play table tennis? The answer in my opinion and for the vast majority of cases is: No!.
You can find many tables from the cheaper price segments that are perfect for recreational use. In this case, it is usually not necessary that a table exactly meets the official requirements of the ITTF, Nevertheless, the qualitative materials have their purpose, of course.
And that is to ensure that just these official competition conditions are given with them. For example, a standard ball must bounce from 30 cm. about 23 cm. high. You can be sure that this is the case with a high-end table From my experience, beginners and even advanced players do not need a high-end table that guarantees the perfect competitive conditions.
What is needed, however, is a reliable and robust table.
What is a good ping pong table thickness?
How to Choose a Table Tennis Table – Most regulation size table tennis tables range in thickness from 12mm to 30mm. As a general rule, the thicker the surface, the better the table. The best ping pong tables for high-traffic rec centers and for competitive players are 25mm+ table tennis tables.
Beginners and game room buyers usually get by fine with cheaper ping pong tables that are in the 13mm to 15mm range. Why get a thicker table? The thicker table will have a truer bounce, will be less likely to warp, typically has a sturdier undercarriage, and can handle being moved around more for places such as clubs or schools.
As a general rule, the thicker the surface, the better the table. Whether you are investing in family fun, adding an amenity to your business, or working on your health, you want your table to last. When it comes to the lifespan of a ping pong table, pay attention to both what is on top and what is underneath. The surface should at least have a treated paint surface and you will want to avoid anything with decals or stickers.
Higher end ITTF approved tables feature special surface treatments to withstand higher volume play. The undercarriage can be just as important as the surface. Each table has its own configuration, but many will state what type of metal is used and how thick the tubing is. For a table that sits stationary in a home, 30mm or less is sufficient.
A rock-solid table tennis table will be around 50mm. The size of the wheel casters is another feature to evaluate. If your table is going in and out of storage and constantly wheeled around, look for 3in to 6in locking caster wheels to keep things moving smoothly.
What are good ping pong tables made of?
Playing Surface Material – All of the modern table tennis tables are manufactured with fiberboard. In most cases, it is probably high-density fiberboard. But if you are building your own to play on at home, you might be able to use medium density fiberboard (MDF) as an alternative. The thickness can be either 1 inch or 0.75 inches. Either is good for playability.
