Meanwhile, Vermont’s Shacksbury, a more artisanal, quickly expanding cider brand, cans its craft ciders at 6.5% ABV, entering IPA territory. The reason ciders can be so strong makes sense.
Alcohol comes from fermenting sugars — something apple juice can have plenty of. Cider drinkers, however, might be interested in more sessionable options that ease up on the alcohol, similar to how light beer emerged in the late ’70s and early ’80s and, more recently, “session IPAs” became all the rage on the craft beer scene.

These 3.8% ABV canned beverages were “inspired by the classic Italian spritz tradition,” mixing Vermont-produced cider with a natural elixir featuring rose petals and grapefruit made by Burlington’s own Alice & the Magician. While both products have been discontinued, Shacksbury offers a newer product called Lo-Ball, similar to the Spritz, with a slightly higher ABV of 4.9%.
Shakesbury’s Lo-Ball is available in limited markets.

Cider is a kind of wine. It is not a kind of beer. Just like wine is made from fermenting grape juice, cider is made from fermenting apple juice. A place for making cider is a “cidery” or a “winery” and it is not a “brewery.” Beer is brewed. Brewing involves boiling or cooking.
To make beer the “brewer” steeps barley or wheat grains to convert the starches to sugar. The liquid is then known as “wort.” Brewers then boil the wort with hops before fermenting it into beer. A cider maker does not use grains or (traditionally) hops, and we do not steep or boil the juice before fermenting it.
A cider maker puts the fresh apple juice in a fermenter and adds yeast to create a liquid known as “must.” Once the must is fermented it is cider. Apples ready to be pressed. What is the controversy with Angry Orchard?
“Diversity” and “inclusion” are big buzz words in the corporate world right now. In the wake of the Black Lives Matter protest in the summer of 2020, and the current reckoning in the craft beer industry around systemic sexism, racism, and homophobia, nearly every brand has put out a statement about its commitment to enact lasting positive change.
As consumers, how do we know when these are just performative platitudes, or when the company in question is truly striving to address problems inside and outside of its organization? And, within the cider industry, how can we authentically address these questions and work towards real multifaceted progress without tokenizing underrepresented groups? Angry Orchard and its parent company, Boston Beer Co.
, are facing these questions head-on. As you may remember, in 2019, Angry Orchard was embroiled in controversy after being accused of racially profiling a Black couple shopping in its gift shop. About five months before that, in March 2019, Boston Beer Co.
Developed an Action Learning Project focused on Diversity and Inclusion, which then led to a Task Force, and then a series of committees focused on Diversity & Inclusion, building allyship, recruiting and fostering inclusivity within Boston Beer Co’s brands. That all might sound like corporate-speak for lots of bureaucratic dealings, but there have been some meaningful changes made within the company.
For example, as a continuing part of this effort, in October 2020, the Carissa Sweigart was hired as Boston Beer Co.’s full-time Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Leader. Sweigart’s role is a long-term commitment from the brand and part of an active strategy to build a more inclusive culture in the company.
