AUSTIN (KXAN) — During a three-week winter hiatus from shooting the hit CW show Supernatural, Jensen Ackles spent his downtime cleaning bathrooms, installing mirrors and stringing up lights – that’s the glamorous life of a TV star who is now the co-owner of, a craft brewery in the Austin area.After 13 seasons and more than 260 episodes, Ackles can play Dean Winchester in his sleep, but this new gig has him joining forces with his wife, Danneel Ackles and his extended family.When Ackles started homebrewing with his brother-in-law Gino Graul in Los Angeles, it was just a hobby.
“We would go in the backyard and tried to brew our own beer. It was horrible,” says Ackles with a chuckle. “Our friends were very kind and said that it wasn’t.” Fast forward several years and the idea of starting a craft brewery became a reality when Ackles and his wife decided to move back to Texas after having their first child.

Since Ackles shoots in Vancouver, B.C. most months out of the year, his wife and her brother manage the day-to-day operations. The business found its head brewer in Nate Seale, the former head brewer at (512) Brewing Company.
Once all the pieces were in place, the family set out to make the Family Business Beer Co. a place where they would want to take their own family and make beers they would want to drink. “At the end of the day, if people come out here and they take a look around and they enjoy the beer, the food, and the music and just the fellowship that happens out here,” Ackles says. It is expected that some of the people walking through those doors will be Supernatural fans. Last week, a couple from Germany stopped by the brewery – even though it wasn’t open yet – because they were fans of the show. While fans will drive some of the business, Ackles realizes they’re not the ones who will be fixtures at the bar.
As far as the Supernatural crowd, I think that will ebb and flow as we kind of move forward. If it does bring someone out here to enjoy what we’ve created out here, then I’ll take it.” To make it inviting, the brewery has a large outdoor space dotted with picnic tables as well as an indoor, air-conditioned taproom for our Texas summers.
With three children of their own, Danneel Ackles, who is also an actor, really wanted to make the venue kid-friendly, which is why there is a large playscape area where the kids can run around. Danneel Ackles also brought her Louisiana roots with her to the brewery with the help of friends Jep and Jessica Robertson – of A&E’s Duck Dynasty fame.

In fact there’s not much to remind you of the old property—owners Andrew Purchase, Michael Freedman, Tommy Berry, Jack Dahan, Michael Wallace and David Warner (yep, that one) have done an amazing job on the transformation. St Andrews Beach Brewery makes and packs all of its beer on-site in a 25HL brewhouse.
At the moment they’re serving four core beers: a US pale ale, Aussie lager, summery Golden Ale and a crisp pilsner. They all go down pretty well with the menu, which is built around fresh-baked pizzas (try the pork sausage), healthy salads and hunger-busting burgers. But there’s a bit more variety than you’d expect from your typical brewpub.
The Green Tea Soba noodles are a refreshing summer blast, topped off with radish, edamame, pickled ginger and lemongrass chicken. And there’s always Pilsner-battered fish n’ chips if you’re stuck for ideas. Throw in a few bar bites (Sydney rock oysters and ceviche tostada are standouts) and you’ve got the perfect menu for summer grazing.

A BERKSHIRE brewery has been saved from collapse after being bought out four months after it found itself at the centre of allegations of bullying and sexual harassment. West Berkshire Brewery has now been taken over by The Yattendon Group, a private company owned by newspaper proprietors the Iliffe family, publishers of the Newbury Weekly News and Newbury Today.

- The brewery’s managing director Tom Lucas, 41, was removed from his post in September after a group of present and former employees known as the WBB Renegades wrote an open letter claiming there were accounts of “bullying, racism, homophobic, sexism and sexual harassment” at the company.
A spokesman for West Berkshire Brewery, who asked to remain unnamed, confirmed the acquisition and said measures had now been put in place to ensure such incidents don’t occur in future. Speaking to The Reading Chronicle this week, he said: “There were some articles published in the Times last year about insensible behaviour from the CEO, which were dealt with promptly.
The company has put in measures to ensure that this does not happen again.” Looking ahead to the future and commenting on the sale to the Yattendon Group, the spokesman said: “The transaction occurred on December 23. “Yattendon Group Plc has acquired the trade and business of West Berkshire Brewery and will continue to trade under that name.
“West Berkshire Brewery ran into difficulty during the course of last year and got into cash flow trouble in the autumn. “I think it is very positive news for the brewery and the staff have reacted very well to it. “We have just started the process of settling it down and can begin moving forwards.” Founded in 1995, the Yattendon Estate-based business has won a string of awards for its craft beers and secured more than £750,000 through crowdfunding from members of the public.
