Once all the pieces were in place, the family set out to make the Family Business Beer Co. a place where they would want to take their own family and make beers they would want to drink. “At the end of the day, if people come out here and they take a look around and they enjoy the beer, the food, and the music and just the fellowship that happens out here,” Ackles says. Last week, a couple from Germany stopped by the brewery – even though it wasn’t open yet – because they were fans of the show. The 41-year-old has revealed details of his surprising wealth in an interview with The Daily Telegraph, where the 41-year-old opens up about the savvy decisions that have turned him into a business genius.

The three-time world champion in April made a shock cameo return to professional swimming when he competed in the Bells Beach Classic — but he has had more important things bubbling away well outside his surfing career. His net worth is now estimated to be worth $20 million, making him one of the most successful post-retirement business athletes in Australia.

The newspaper reports the majority of that fortune is not linked to his surfing achievements with his career wrapping up having earned a total $2.76 million in prize money. His most notable business success was his investment in Australian craft brewing company Balter, which in 2019 sold for somewhere between $150 million and $200 million.

That pay-out is just the tip of the iceberg of Fanning’s business undertakings. He is reported to have an extensive real estate portfolio and has ongoing investment interests in several undisclosed projects. He is also reported to have a substantial stake in fitness chain FS8.

Fanning remains one of the most recognisable surfers on the planet and remains an ambassador of several surf brands, including Rip Curl. His star-power as a brand ambassador has only continue to rise in recent years, despite his retirement. Fanning had met Karissa, a model, in 2004 and she’d been by his side through all his triumphs on the world surf tour, including championships in 2007, 2009 and 2013.But after a fight to save the relationship they went their separate ways. Fanning’s year only got worse as he was famously attacked by a shark at a competition in South Africa — an event that left him suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

To cap his year off his older brother Pete, 43, died of an enlarged heart. It was the second brother Mick had lost after a car crash took the life of Sean in 1998. “That was the one that just floored me. I was like ‘what else? What else can be taken in a year?’ At the end of 2015, I just hit rock bottom,” Fanning said.

“I felt like I had nothing to give, nothing to give myself, or to the people around me, or to family or friends. I just didn’t see a way of coming back.”I’ve never felt that empty before, I just lay in bed, did nothing, wouldn’t leave the house.” Better times were on the horizon.

Group 1 winners like Makybe Diva used to call it home. Now there are 8000 apple and pear trees growing on the old track, and the horse boxes have morphed private drinking booths.

In fact there’s not much to remind you of the old property—owners Andrew Purchase, Michael Freedman, Tommy Berry, Jack Dahan, Michael Wallace and David Warner (yep, that one) have done an amazing job on the transformation. St Andrews Beach Brewery makes and packs all of its beer on-site in a 25HL brewhouse.

At the moment they’re serving four core beers: a US pale ale, Aussie lager, summery Golden Ale and a crisp pilsner. They all go down pretty well with the menu, which is built around fresh-baked pizzas (try the pork sausage), healthy salads and hunger-busting burgers. But there’s a bit more variety than you’d expect from your typical brewpub.

The Green Tea Soba noodles are a refreshing summer blast, topped off with radish, edamame, pickled ginger and lemongrass chicken. And there’s always Pilsner-battered fish n’ chips if you’re stuck for ideas. Throw in a few bar bites (Sydney rock oysters and ceviche tostada are standouts) and you’ve got the perfect menu for summer grazing.

4. Big high ceilings and a bar decked out in terrazzo and dusty old bricks.

A BERKSHIRE brewery has been saved from collapse after being bought out four months after it found itself at the centre of allegations of bullying and sexual harassment. West Berkshire Brewery has now been taken over by The Yattendon Group, a private company owned by newspaper proprietors the Iliffe family, publishers of the Newbury Weekly News and Newbury Today.

1. The family also owns the 9,000-acre Yattendon Estate where the award-winning brewery is based.
2. The brewery’s managing director Tom Lucas, 41, was removed from his post in September after a group of present and former employees known as the WBB Renegades wrote an open letter claiming there were accounts of “bullying, racism, homophobic, sexism and sexual harassment” at the company.

A spokesman for West Berkshire Brewery, who asked to remain unnamed, confirmed the acquisition and said measures had now been put in place to ensure such incidents don’t occur in future. Speaking to The Reading Chronicle this week, he said: “There were some articles published in the Times last year about insensible behaviour from the CEO, which were dealt with promptly.

The company has put in measures to ensure that this does not happen again.” Looking ahead to the future and commenting on the sale to the Yattendon Group, the spokesman said: “The transaction occurred on December 23. “Yattendon Group Plc has acquired the trade and business of West Berkshire Brewery and will continue to trade under that name.

“West Berkshire Brewery ran into difficulty during the course of last year and got into cash flow trouble in the autumn. “I think it is very positive news for the brewery and the staff have reacted very well to it. “We have just started the process of settling it down and can begin moving forwards.” Founded in 1995, the Yattendon Estate-based business has won a string of awards for its craft beers and secured more than £750,000 through crowdfunding from members of the public.

• They have got other businesses, such as a malting business.
• They see the craft beer sector as growing strongly, and were very attracted to the brewery’s offer of a low-alcohol beer, Solo, which is going very well.

“They have had lots of links with the brewery, regularly trading with it through Crisp Maltings. “Ultimately they thought it was a good addition to their portfolio. “They are a long-term family business looking for cash flow and a solid business model rather than ‘bump it up and flog it to the next guy’.”
