Future of the 30-pack case is secure — at least for now During political campaigns, much is said about the regular male voter. They call him Joe Six-Pack. But things are different in Pennsylvania, thanks largely to state Liquor Control Board rules. It is the case, not the six-pack, that is the statewide package of choice.
- So, as pundits write and talk about voters in our important swing state, let’s be sure they get it right.
- We’re Joe 30-pack, thank you.
- This is the package in which the less-expensive, and less full-flavored, mass-produced brews are sold.
- Look around any beer distributor.
- The 30-pack rules, and, often, it is featured prominently in a distributor’s floor displays.
But, are the days numbered for the popular, squarish container? Retailers think so, even if the major breweries say otherwise, or decline to comment. The reason? The rising costs of beer. When the 30-pack was first introduced, it was a cost-saver for beer drinkers.
- You’d get six cans for free, or for a few more pennies,” says Dan Tanczos, who owns Tanczos Beverage, a major distributor of beer in the area.
- But, recent price increases have pushed 30-packs of the major breweries’ flagship beers, Coors, Budweiser and Miller, past the $20 mark.
- At that price, people might think they can get a much better beer, like Heineken, for just a few dollars more,” says Tanczos.
Additionally, the 30-packs are no longer the value they once were. In fact, on a per-can basis, cans in 30-packs actually cost more than the exact same cans in a 24-case package. “We always tell people that, because if you do the math, you’ll see that the cans in the 24-pack cases are actually cheaper,” says Tanczos.
I think it’s only a matter of time before the 30-packs are phased out, but that’s only my opinion,” says Nima Shangy, who manages the Emmaus-based Shangy’s, another major area beer distributor. Representatives for Budweiser, Miller and Coors were asked about the future of the 30-pack. Of the three, only Coors responded to requests for comment.
A spokeswoman said the company has no plans to change its packaging. Rumors about the impending demise of the 30-pack case have been circulating in the beer industry for several years. One of the often-cited reasons is the problems encountered in shipping the odd-shaped size of the package itself, but Shangy dismisses this.
- A wooden pallet — the standard way to ship beer cases in quantity — can hold 91 of the 30-pack cases, and only 78 cases of 24-pack cans, Shangy says.
- The 30-pack is actually easier to ship.
- But retailers did note some in-store problems.
- Tanczos says some of his customers have experienced problems with the 30-packs, especially when they try to stack a case or two of soda on top of two stacked 30-pack cases, a situation that creates instability.
More important, the problem for the major breweries is that the higher cost of their flagship brews may convince loyal customers to consider cheaper brands, a process that might dilute the drawing power of the flagship beers themselves. Shangy says he has not passed on the recent price increases and is selling the mass-market beers almost at cost.
What we’re hoping is that the people will come in for the cheaper beer and decide to buy something better,” Shangy says. But, even when told about the price advantages of the 24-pack cases, most customers would still rather buy the 30-packs, says Tanczos. “They buy them mostly for convenience. They say it saves them an extra trip in the car.” So, the future of the 30-pack is worth watching, especially as the price of beer continues to rise.
What’s next? Higher gas and milk prices? Beer Awards: Two U.S. breweries, whose products are available in Pennsylvania, received medals at the prestigious Brewing Industry International Awards in the United Kingdom, one of the brewing industry’s most coveted awards.
Oregon’s Rogue Brewery won two medal places for its American Amber and Shakespeare Stout. Sierra Nevada won for its flagship brew, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. Exact metal positions — gold, silver and bronze — for the breweries will be announced on May 25 at a ceremony in Guildhall in London. The awards date back to the 19th century and are held every other year.

- Indeed, Michael Collins, co-founder of Adelaide-based craft brewing company Pirate Life, believes that cans are superior to bottles for a number of reasons.
“If you put a big, hoppy beer in a can then that can will slow down the rate that those flavours will deteriorate,” Collins told The Advertiser. Pirate Life, deemed ‘kings’ of the Australian craft beer scene, puts all of its nine varieties of beer into cans, with Collins arguing that it’s a complete myth that consumers can ‘taste the tin’ from canned beer. Rather, it’s our smell senses that prevail, meaning that when drinking directly from the can, the smell of metal interferes with our taste buds.

Tooheys New also recently brought back its iconic 30-pack of classic cans for a limited time.
