Is apple pie high in fat?
Apple Pie, Lightened Up With apple season here and the holidays fast approaching, it’s hard not to crave homemade apple pie, but all the fat and calories can help pack on the pounds over winter. How about some lighter options? Nutrition Facts A modest slice of apple pie has more than 400 calories and about 20 grams of fat (five of those come from the less-healthy saturated fats).
- Add some ice cream or whipped cream, and you’re looking at well over 500 calories, which knocks out 25% of the average 2,000-calorie diet.
- Skipping the toppings is a good place to start, but there are ways to adjust the main ingredients and still satisfy that apple pie urge.
- Filling The fruity filling is the least problematic part of your average apple pie; the crust is another story (more on that below).
Most fillings are made from apples, a small amount of sugar and some low-calorie flavorings like cinnamon, vanilla or lemon juice. Watch out for recipes that call for gobs of butter – save that for the crust. The ingredients may include a sprinkle of flour to help thicken the filling; that’s not going to make a significant difference on the calories or fat so don’t worry.
Some folks pile on loads of apples, which can cause the calories to climb. One apple has about 70 calories – you really shouldn’t need more than half to three-quarters of an apple per person in a slice. Crust Butter, shortening and lard are three things that help make a flaky and tasty pie crust – unfortunately, they contribute oodles of fat and calories.
Your smartest option is to use half of the crust by making a galette, which is a rustic, open-faced apple tart. You can have all the apple pie flavor (with the same ingredients) in much more figure-friendly portions. Pre-made refrigerated pie dough is an option for in-a-pinch baking, but I prefer to make my own from scratch.
- Use a combo of all-purpose and whole-wheat pastry flour for a nutty flavor and some extra fiber.
- Of course, you will need some butter, but replacing some of it with plain low-fat yogurt or light sour cream can help make a lighter but still flavorful crust.
- Beyond a galette, try using light, airy (and much lower calorie) phyllo dough to make apple turnovers, or make a warm apple crisp with a crunchy topping made from oats and a few nuts.
For fall dinner parties, I like to make individual apple crisps in ramekins for my guests. With all the calories saved, there’s room for a small scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. : Apple Pie, Lightened Up

Is moonshine made out of sugar?
How is Moonshine Made? – The traditional ingredients for moonshine are corn and sugar, and during fermentation, the sugar produces ethanol, which makes hooch or moonshine. During distillation, alcohol separates from the mash. Unlike other liquors such as whiskey or bourbon, moonshine is unaged, which produces a distilled spirit with high alcohol content.
The stereotype of moonshiners centers around how “country folk” distill and transport their potables in jugs marked “XXX” during the night to avoid being detected. But having access to commercially produced all-copper moonshine stills on the internet has made moonshine distillation less risky in the modern era.
But for a great drink, here is the recipe:

The nutrition lowdown – Pastry usually makes up more than half the ingredients in a mince pie, so it tends to be higher in saturated fat but lower in sugar and nutrients than a slice of Christmas cake. The set portion size is an advantage – unless you add a spoonful of cream or brandy butter, which adds considerably more fat, especially saturates, and calories.
Is apple pie healthy yes or no?
Is Apple Pie Healthy? – Apple pie is healthier than other types of sweet pies like chocolate pie and custard pie. It uses apples as a main ingredient, so it naturally beats any non-fruit pie. That said, apple pie is only healthy in moderation. Just because apples are the star of the dish, doesn’t mean that the sugar, flour, and butter content doesn’t count.
Is apple pie good for your stomach?

Can you gain weight from pie?
Sadly, they’re not great as a regular part of your diet. An average individual meat pie provides around 450kcal, but the biggest problem is the 12g of saturated fat inside it – that’s more than half the daily guideline. If you have buttery mashed potato or chips on the side, the fat content of your meal is even higher.
Can eating pie make you gain weight?
by Brittany Risher November 24, 2016 It’s that time of year: Pie season. Almost 20% of all pie eating in the U.S. occurs during the holidays, according to one report, That adds up to approximately 50 million pumpkin pies just at Thanksgiving, according to Nestle, But if you’re training for a race or event, is it OK to indulge? Just this once? (Or twice?) We asked a few sports nutritionists who say stop fooling yourself but stop worrying about protein-to-carb ratios and — if you really want some — have a slice.
Having a small piece of pie on occasion will not make a difference on your performance,” says Leslie Bonci, RD, a sports dietetics specialist and owner of Active Eating Advice, “In fact, if you deprive yourself of something you really enjoy, you may find that when you have that particular food, you end up over-consuming it and possibly other foods as well.” If you’re worried about pie because you’re on a low-carb kick, you may want to rethink your eating plan.
“Too many athletes tend to be carb-phobic. But they need carbs for energy — and glycogen is important for endurance energy,” says Dana White, RD, a sports dietitian and athletic trainer. Granted, flaky crust and sugary filling are by no means recovery foods or something you should eat regularly.
“A small slice of pie is anywhere from 200–400 calories,” Bonci says. “If you add in pie every day and don’t take out another food or increase your energy output through exercise, you will see your weight creep up.” So if you’re going to have some apple pie, you may want to skip that glass of wine or go lighter on the mashed potatoes.
Either way, pie isn’t all carbs, and many ingredients do have some health benefits. “Pie is more than crusts with nothing in between — that’s a Pop-Tart,” Bonci says. “With pie, you’re getting some fruit — or when pumpkin, you’re getting a vegetable. That has some nutritional value to it.” Here’s how that breaks down for your favorite pies: Apple Apples contain an antioxidant called quercetin.
In addition to being anti-inflammatory, quercetin may help lower blood pressure and reduce cholesterol, White says. “For athletes, it’s good to get more of this,” she adds. Pumpkin A slice of this seasonal dessert has 94% of a woman’s daily vitamin A (in the form of beta-carotene) and 73% of a man’s A.
“Beta-carotene may prevent some oxidation that occurs during exercise and keep cells healthy,” Bonci says. Plus, adding ginger not only amps up the taste, it’s also anti-inflammatory. Cherry Unless you love baking, you may not know that cherry pies are traditionally made with tart cherries.
- In studies, these cherries have been shown to speed recovery and reduce muscle soreness for runners, and decrease the muscle damage that naturally happens after strength training,
- The anthocyanins in tart cherries suppress the production of inflammation,” Bonci says, which leads to these post-workout benefits.
Blueberry This berry is also loaded with antioxidants and anthocyanins, and research suggests it may help keep your brain, heart and eyes healthy. When you bake your pie, try to use wild blueberries: Their ORAC score (a measure of antioxidant levels) is double that of regular blueberries,
Sweet Potato Like pumpkin, sweet potatoes are rich in beta-carotene. And although sweet potatoes have more calories than pumpkin purée, they also have three times the fiber and more than twice as much protein per gram. You also get more vitamin C from these spuds. Pecan Yes, nuts are a good source of healthy fats.
However, pecan pie is also one of the highest in sugar and calories, White says. If pecan is your favorite, she recommends choosing a small piece. Regardless of which kind of pie you love, it’s OK to have your pie and eat it, too — just not every single day.
Why is pie so fattening?
Which is Healthier: Fruit Cobbler vs. Fruit Pie Summer is all about fruit-filled desserts. When faced with the choice of cobbler or pie, which would you choose? Read the pros and cons of each and YOU vote for the healthier winner. Fruit Cobbler Pros: Cobblers are a combo of fruit filling topped with a crust made of biscuit dough, traditional pie crust or a pour-on batter.
Typically, the topping is made from milk, sugar, and flour. It’s easier to control the ingredients in the crust-topping of a cobbler than it is with pie; if you don’t want your cobbler too sweet, you can choose to cut down on the sugar. You can also use less of the topping, since it doesn’t have to cover the entire top of the cobbler.
Cons: A 4-ounce piece of peach cobbler contains about 330 calories, 17 grams fat, and 4.5 grams saturated fat (that’s over 20 percent of your daily recommended amounts of both fat and saturated fat!). If the cobbler is baked in a large tray, portion control can go out the window.
Control portions by baking cobbler in individual ramekins or baking up half the recipe.Use less of the topping (about ¼ less) to shave off calories.Instead of ice cream, serve with 1 tablespoon of whipped cream.Try or Paula Deen’s slow cooked with under 250 calories a serving.
Fruit Pie Pros: You’ll get in your daily dose of fruit, vitamins and antioxidants with a fruit-filled pie. The fillings are usually fairly simple, with calories coming from the fruit, a touch of sugar and some flavorings containing minimal calories like cinnamon or vanilla extract.
Cons: A slice of pie typically contains over 400 calories and 20 grams of fat. Enjoy it a la mode or with whipped cream and you’ve jacked up the calories by 100 to 200 per slice – yikes! Many pre-made pie crusts are made with heart clogging hydrogenated oils or lard, so the fat you’re eating is not the healthy type.
Some pies have crust on the bottom and top. Whether it’s lattice or a fully covered top crust, more crust means more calories and fat. Healthy Pie Tips:
Make a with canola oil to reduce artery clogging saturated and trans fat.Skip pie recipes that call for gobs of butter in the filling.Go for totally fruit-filled pies as opposed to those filled with higher-calorie ingredients like nuts and raisins.Choose pies with crust on the bottom only.Try to lighten up your next pie.Try a (a.k.a. crostada), or made with lower calorie phyllo dough.

What is the healthiest pie to eat?
Pumpkin Pie – As for pumpkin pie, here we start with a vegetable (yay!). The pumpkin delivers fiber and, like all orange foods, pumpkins are packed with carotenoids, which can help tackle free radicals and decrease inflammation. Of course, to turn that vegetable into pie, we add sugar and a crust, so the pumpkin’s not quite as pure as it was in its original vegetable state.
Is apple pie healthier than cake?
What is healthier – pie or cake? Paging through vintage cookbooks always gives me quite the inspiration. With a combo birthday & mother’s day celebration happening at the start of June there was an inkling to find a cake recipe (or two, my sister is vegan so I usually make one for her too!).
- The inkling went into pie as I was also archiving a new to the collection cookbook.
- First a curiosity of swapping out all purpose flour for wheat flour (seems a 50/50 or 75 wheat/25 white plus a little extra water would do the trick).
- Why swapping to wheat flour? Graham flour! I’m curious to see how it would present as a pie crust.
Plus there will be doughnuts in the future From there my brand went hmmm, I wonder which is healthier pie or cake? Let’s do a breakdown of a pair of recipes. From 1964 Mary Meade’s Country Cookbook.46 cake options, 38 pie options. Let’s pick a similar pair: Blueberry Cake & Blueberry Pie Blueberry Cake, pg 92
1 cup blueberries / 83 calories 1/4 cup flour / 114 calories1/4 cup butter / 407 calories 1 cup sugar / 773 calories 1 egg, beaten / 78 calories 1 3/4 cup flour / 796 calories2 teaspoons baking powder / 4 calories 1/2 teaspoon salt / 0 calories 1/2 cup milk (whole) / 73 calories 1/3 cup sugar / 255 calories 1 teaspoon cinnamon / 6 calories
This recipe makes 8 servings. Blueberry Pie, pg 130
1 quart fresh blueberries / 340 calories 1 cup sugar / 773 calories 3 tablespoons flour / 85 calories juice of half a lemon / 6 calories 2 tablespoons butter / 204 calories
+ pastry for double crust
2 cups flour / 910 calories 1 teaspoon salt / 0 calories 2/3 cup shortening / 1196 calories (or 2/3 cup of lard / 1536 calories) 1/4 cup water / 0 calories
This recipe makes 5 servings. Adding up each calorie count for the cake and pie we arrive at 2589 total calories for the cake vs 3514 for the pie with shortening in the crust. At 8 servings, a slice of cake will be roughly 324 calories while the pie at 5 servings will net you roughly 702 calories a slice.
- Slicing the pie smaller for 8 servings puts you at 440 calories per slice.) Note: calorie counts will always be a give or take number due to how you measure your ingredients So in this instance, the cake is the better for you option when it comes to calories.
- Does that mean it’s healthier? The argument might lie in the amount of blueberries.
You’re going to get more of the antioxidants blueberries from the pie with more of them present in the filling than the cake. So blueberry cake is healthier for the amount of calories involved, pie is healthier for the amount of antioxidants you get in a slice! How about we break down another pair? This time two classics: Lady Baltimore Cake & Shoo-Fly Pie.
1 cup butter / 1627 calories 1 1/2 cups sugar / 1161 calories 3 1/2 cups sifted cake flour / 1399 calories 4 teaspoons baking powder / 8 calories 1/2 teaspoon salt / 0 calories 1 cup milk (whole) / 146 calories 1 teaspoon vanilla / 12 calories 8 egg whites / 136 calories 1/2 cup sugar / 387 calories 1/8 teaspoon salt / 0 calories

Makes 6 servings. The entire Lady Baltimore Cake weighs in at a rough total of 6116 calories, while the entire Shoo-Fly Pie will net you roughly 2106 calories. Hey the Shoo-Fly is healthier in calories! But wait we need to break down the servings. At 12 servings, Lady Baltimore is roughly 510 calories with frosting (without frosting is 406 calories) while the Shoo-Fly pie at 6 servings is roughly 675 servings a slice! Why are pies so high in calories?
Cakes & Pies Calories Cakes and pies often include high-calorie foods like wheat flour, butter, cream, and sugar, which can be viewed separately in the baking ingredients calorie chart. The nutritional value of baked goods tends to be low because the main ingredients provide mostly fats and simple carbohydrates, which can immediately cause rapid fluctuations in blood sugar level and over time lead to increased body weight.
- However, a portion of calories in pies and cakes can also be from healthy ingredients such as eggs, which contain proteins and nutrients.
- Many items commonly used when baking pastries like spices and vanilla extract are used in such a small amount that the calories are negligible, but other flavorful additions like tree nuts and dried fruit can boost both nutritional value and calorie density.
Packaged cakes and pies, even those labeled “low-fat,” can include high fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors, and artificial sweeteners. Although products marketed as healthy replacements can lower the total calories per serving, these are typically no better (if not worse) than the original recipe.
