We show you how to take the moonshiner professional role in Red Dead Online and how much it’ll cost you for this frontier pursuit. 
Red Dead Online has added the first new role since they were introduced to the game: the Moonshiner, a profession based around brewing and distributing barrels of elicit hooch. We’ll show you how to become a moonshiner and what you can expect from it right here. 
Your moonshine shack doubles as a bar for you and your friends. Cheersh! | Joel Franey/USgamer, Rockstar North/Rockstar Games Becoming a moonshiner actually requires you to become a Trader first, then to complete one of several conditions. You don’t have to complete them all, just one of them:
Pay five gold bars in the “Progress” section of the main menu (not including the Trader starting fee) Complete a Trader Selling Delivery Reach Trader Rank 5
Once you complete any of these conditions, you’ll get a letter sent both to any delivery offices and to your camp lockbox, with Cripps offering to introduce you to famed bootlegger Maggie Fike. This will open up a mission in Emerald Ranch (you should be able to see it on the map marked by a yellow icon), in which you can go to an old saloon and meet Fike personally in a cutscene.
She’ll explain how she wants to start up her bootlegging business again, and wants you to help provided you pay an up-front investment. Like with being a trader, you’ll have an opportunity to pay either in the cinematic, or you can do so later if you have the money. To do this, go into the online menu (left on the D-Pad) and go down to “Camp and Properties”.
There’ll be a second option for where you want to put a Moonshine Shack, though it makes it clear it’ll charge you for the privilege. Once you do buy it, the Moonshiner role will open up and you’ll be able to start playing it for yourself.

(Image credit: Rockstar Games) How to get started as a Moonshiner: If you’ve reached Rank 5 in the Trader role, or completed a sell mission as part of that career, then Cripps will invite you to meet the bootlegger Maggie Fike over at Emerald Ranch. If you want to skip this requirement, then you can go through the Progress > Roles menu and unlock the Moonshiner role with 5 gold bars. After meeting with Fike, she’ll sell you a Moonshining Shack so you can get up and running, but that’s going to set you back 25 gold bars – making this a much higher start up cost than for the other roles. There’s more to this role than just making Moonshine, however, as you’ll also get access to a series of story missions with Maggie Fike. Progress through these missions will help you improve your business and make more money, as well as set up your own bar and even hire a band to keep your clientele entertained. As a Moonshiner, you can unlock unique skills and items including:
- Bold Dance: Dance with flair
- Toxic Moonshine Pamphlet: A recipe for how to craft Toxic Moonshine
- Bar Expansion: Remodel the basement to include a bar

- Master Distiller: Reduce the time taken to create a batch of Moonshine
- Polished Copper Upgrade: Allows the operation to produce strong Moonshine

How do you trigger the Moonshiner role?
Becoming A Moonshiner – Rockstar never intended players to stick to just one Role, unless you are a very dedicated roleplayer with a very specific character concept in mind. As such, the Moonshiner is the first Role which requires some progress to have been made in another Role – the Trader, in this case. When selecting the location of the Moonshiner Shack, it is easy to make a misstep since players aren’t familiar with the mechanics yet. There are a total of five locations, which are static and instanced. This means that all players have access to the same 5 locations, meaning you’ll be “sharing” the shack with other players in a geographical sense, but obviously progress itself is tracked on a player-by-player basis.

Characteristics – Moonshine can be purchased at some Doctor’s Offices for $60 each, but could be as low as $30, depending on the player’s Honor and Fame levels. It can also be found as a loot item. When used, it refills the Dead Eye meter and no Dead Eye is consumed for 10 seconds.

How to Become a Red Dead Online Moonshiner – To become a Moonshiner in Red Dead Online, you’ll first need to meet a handful of requirements. You’ll need to be a Trader—one of the roles, or Frontier Pursuits, already available in RDO —with either a completed Trader Sell Mission under your belt or a Rank 5 rating. 
As with other roles in “Red Dead Online,” becoming a Moonshiner unlocks specialized equipment, clothes and weapons. Rockstar Games Once you’ve met the prerequisites to start moonshining, speak to Cripps and he’ll steer you to an experienced bootlegger named Maggie Fike, who can be found at Emerald Ranch. 
Head to Emerald Ranch to speak with veteran rumrunner Maggie Fike. Rockstar Games Once you’ve found Maggie, you’ll next need a backwoods property to conceal your illicit distilling. You’ll have your pick among five different moonshining shacks in the Grizzlies Mountains, Bayou Nwa, Hennigan’s Stead (in New Austin), the Heartlands or in Tall Trees (West Elizabeth).
Whatever you pick, the startup costs are steep, requiring you to shell out 25 gold bars to Maggie to get started moonshining. Your moonshining shack will look like a normal homestead, but the basement will hide your secret operation. It’s also where you can open an underground bar to serve your liquor.
As you progress through Moonshiner missions, you’ll get the opportunity to customize your saloon, build a dance floor and hire a band. 
After opening a bar in “Red Dead Online” you can customize your décor and expand, but it won’t come cheap. Rockstar Games You’ll also have the option to move locations, for a $250 fee. To do so, check out the “Camp & Properties” section of the player menu.
There’s a lot to the liquor business in Red Dead Online, which will require you to source ingredients, manage the distillation process and handle shipments. It will also present an opportunity to start a business outside of your camp. Moonshiners will take on “story missions” (playable solo or with a posse) in which you’ll help Maggie get revenge against her enemies.
Along the way, you’ll discover new recipes and build up your client list across the five states in Red Dead Online, As with other Frontier Pursuits available in Red Dead Online, becoming a veteran Moonshiner will unlock unique equipment, apparel and accessories, including such weapons as a new sawed-off shotgun design and the flammable moonshine jug.
How do you get the butcher table in RDR2?
